The Rally Sweden is a rally event that takes place every year in early February in the Swedish province of Värmland . It is the only round of the FIA World Rally Championship that takes place on snow and ice. The service park has been in Torsby since 2017 , the start is in Karlstad and the finish line is in Torsby.

history

The Rally Sweden has been held since 1950. Rally Sweden has been part of the WRC since 1973, the first year of the World Rally Championship . In its history, the rally has only had to be canceled twice. 1974 because of the oil crisis and in 1990 because of the mild weather conditions and the resulting snowmelt, which made the roads too muddy. In 2009, due to the rotation system of the World Rally Championship, there was no Rally Sweden either.

The rally was dominated by drivers from the Nordic countries for decades . It was not until the 53rd edition, in 2004, that Sébastien Loeb succeeded in breaking this series with his victory.

Characteristic

Although the Rally Sweden is held on snow and ice, it is one of the fastest races in the World Rally Championship . This is due to the narrow spiked tires that dig through the snow into the frozen ground, as well as the special driving technique of the rally drivers, who sometimes deliberately include the high walls of snow on the roadside in the ideal line by leaning against them and thus can drive through the curves a little faster.
