report

At the second rally after the comeback and after a 17-year break, Toyota celebrated its first victory in the WRC . Jari-Matti Latvala won the Rally Sweden after a strong performance on the final day. At the finish line the Finn had a lead of 29.1 seconds over Ott Tänak (M-Sport-Ford) after 17 special stages . Third place went to the reigning world champion Sébastien Ogier (M-Sport-Ford).

Latvala's victory in the only snow rally of the WRC season was no accident. He was one of the fastest drivers from the start and only had to admit defeat to Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) on the first two days of the race . After Neville's accident at the spectator test on Saturday evening, Latvala inherited the lead, but went into Sunday with a lead of just 3.8 seconds. Latvala drove the best time in the first two special stages on the final day and went into the final power stage with a cushion of 20 seconds on Tänak. The Finn didn't let anything burn up there.

Tänak, who had gone into the final day hoping for his first WRC victory, had to admit that Latvala was stronger at Rally Sweden.

Ogier had to make do with third place this weekend after winning the season opener at the Monte Carlo Rally 2017 . On the first day he had to go out on the track as the first starter, he had lost almost half a minute on Latvala and was unable to significantly reduce the gap on the following two days. A spin during the first special stage on Sunday finally thwarted the reigning world champion's chance of winning.

In the Citroën warehouse, the team leader lost a result among the top five. Kris Meeke got off the road on the 14th special stage and landed in a snow wall, from which he was only able to free himself after more than eight minutes with the help of some spectators. After this loss of time, he couldn't go beyond 12th place.
