Career

Hayden Paddon, whose father was also a rally driver, began karting as a child. Paddon first took part in a rally at the age of 15. From 2006 he started in the New Zealand rally championship. With a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII , he won both the rookie and the junior class. In 2007 Paddon started a world championship run for the first time. After the New Zealand rally , he also drove the Great Britain rally . With a 49th place and one retirement, there was no success for now. In the same year he missed the New Zealand rally championship title by just one point. Paddon won the New Zealand rally championship in 2008. With a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX he drove the New Zealand Rally 2008 and finished it in 13th place overall, which resulted in fourth place in the PWRC class .

In 2009 Paddon was a second time champion in the New Zealand rally championship. He also qualified for the Pirelli Star Driver Asia Pacific Final . There, with a single start in the 2009 World Rally Championship , he not only achieved the PSD final victory and ninth place overall at the Rally Australia , he was also first in the PWRC class. So he received a Pirelli Stardriver scholarship for the next season . This enabled him to take part in six rounds of the PWRC World Rally Championship free of charge in 2010 .

In 2010 , Paddon participated in the six above-mentioned events. He won the PWRC class at his home rally in New Zealand . He finished second in the Rally Germany and the Rally Japan and third in Finland and Great Britain . At the Corsica Rally he scored six points for the championship. With these six runs he reached third place overall in the 2010 PWRC championship . He won the 2011 PWRC championship with four overall victories. In 2012 and 2013 , Paddon started in the SWRC and WRC2 with moderate success.

In 2014 , Hyundai brought him into the top WRC rally class for six world championship races. He achieved the best result at the Rally Australia with sixth place, in the world championship he was fourteenth with 19 points. In the 2015 season , again driving the Hyundai i20 WRC , Paddon climbed the podium for the first time in his career in second place at the Rally Sardinia .

Hayden Paddon and co-driver John Kennard win the 2016 Argentina Rally , making them the first New Zealanders to win a World Championship run in the World Rally Championship .
