The 48th Rally Portugal was held from April 3 to 6, 2014. A total of 16 special stages were driven on gravel.

Reports

Day 1 (Thursday, April 3)

Due to heavy rain at the beginning of the week, the inspection of the special stages could only take place under difficult conditions on Wednesday. The show test for the spectators (does not count as a special stage) was won by Jari-Matti Latvala (Volkswagen) ahead of Henning Solberg (Ford). After the first and only special stage on Thursday, Volkswagen was at the helm with three cars. Sébastien Ogier was 1.3 seconds ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala and Andreas Mikkelsen (+2.2 seconds). The first non- Volkswagen Polo R WRC followed in fourth with Thierry Neuville in the Hyundai i20 WRC 2.9 seconds behind and Kris Meeke in the Citroën DS3 WRC .

Day 2 (Friday, April 4th)

Dani Sordo (Hyundai) set the fastest time in the second and third special stages. After four special stages, Ogier was just ahead of team-mate Latvala. Mikko Hirvonen in the Ford Fiesta RS WRC got faster and faster and worked his way up to third place. Behind them Ott Tänak (Ford), Dani Sordo (Hyundai) and Mads Østberg . The first nine drivers were within nine seconds at this point. Elfyn Evans , who rolled over several times, and Robert Kubica (both Ford), who brushed a tree, were eliminated in the fourth special stage. In the afternoon Hirvonen got faster and faster and took the lead in front of Tänak. Ogier fell back to third place, things got worse for the second VW driver Latvala, who had to give up the rally after a rollover in SS 5. Kris Meeke also dropped out after an accident, so Østberg was the best Citroën driver in fourth place.

Quote from Jari-Matti Latvala: “In a left turn the car slid far out. I corrected it and it came back, but then there was a huge hole on the outside of the curve, maybe the road was washed out by the rain. I hit the hole and the car went up and rolled over. "

3rd day (Saturday, April 5th)

After special stage 10, Ogier took over the leadership from Hirvonen again and did not give it up until the evening. Thanks to the rally 2 regulations , those who were eliminated on Friday took part in the rally again. Evans was in 27th place overall, Kubica had another accident and crossed the finish line in last place. Latvala won the tenth special stage and worked his way up to 17th place. Tänak lost third place in the overall standings due to an accident. Neuville lost two places in special stage 13 due to a damaged wheel suspension. He finished the day in seventh place overall. The best Hyundai driver was, after Saturday, Sordo in fourth place.

4th day (Sunday, April 6th)

Ogier controlled the rally on the last day and won the final power stage ahead of Latvala and Østberg. Fourth placed Dani Sordo dropped out on the connecting route between special stage 13 and special stage 14 due to a broken drive shaft. The guest starter duo Henning Solberg / Ilka Minor (Ford) finished in fifth place despite tire and suspension problems. In the world championship, Sébastien Ogier (91 points) extended his lead over Jari-Matti Latvala (62) and Mads Østberg (48).
