Reports

Day 1 (Thursday, July 31)

Jari-Matti Latvala was the fastest man in the forests of Finland on Thursday . The Volkswagen driver was at the top of three of the four special stages and relegated team-mate Sébastien Ogier to second place. At the end of the first day, the two separated by 4.5 seconds. Third place went to Kris Meeke (Citroën), who needed 9.2 seconds longer than Latvala for the first four stages. Behind that, a bigger gap opened up to Mikko Hirvonen (Ford), who had already lost over 26 seconds to Latvala.

Day 2 (Friday, August 1st)

The first special stage (SS 5) on Friday took the riders over the 14.5 kilometers of “Pihlajakoski”. Despite a slip off the road, Jari-Matti Latvala set the fastest time with a narrow lead over Juho Hänninen (+0.4 seconds) and Sébastien Ogier (+1.2 seconds). Thierry Neuville ( Hyundai i20 WRC ) damaged the rear of his car and lost the spoiler, but was able to continue. Robert Kubica (Ford) drove the car into a ditch. He couldn't go any further and had to give up. SS 7 was won by Kris Meeke (Citroën), he fought a duel for second place with Ogier all day. In the evening, Meeke was 1.6 seconds ahead of Ogier in second overall. There was a close three-way battle for fourth place between Andreas Mikkelsen ( VW Polo R WRC ), Mads Østberg ( Citroën DS3 WRC ) and Mikko Hirvonen ( Ford Fiesta RS WRC ). Mikkelsen was 1.1 seconds ahead of Østberg and 3.1 seconds on Hirvonen at the end of the day.

3rd day (Saturday, August 2nd)

Jari-Matti Latvala lost a large part of his lead over Sébastien Ogier due to braking problems . Latvala took a lead of 3.4 seconds into the final day of the rally. Third place was still held by Kris Meeke , he is the only Citroën factory driver left in the competition. For Mads Østberg in the second DS3 WRC, the rally was over on Saturday. He ran over a stone on the last morning stage (SS 18) and had an accident. He did reach the service park, where damage to the roll cage was found. Østberg was fifth behind Andreas Mikkelsen in the Volkswagen Polo and ahead of Mikko Hirvonen in the M-Sport Ford.

4th day (Sunday, August 3rd)

Jari-Matti Latvala won his home rally by a narrow 3.6 seconds ahead of team-mate Sébastien Ogier . In the final super stage, Ogier drove 0.1 seconds faster than Latvala and secured three additional world championship points. Kris Meeke finished third with an almost flawless rally .

Quote from Jari-Matti Latvala: «It was so difficult to get the win here. I had a fantastic feeling behind the wheel, but the brake problem put me in a difficult position. I almost lost the win, but I fought my way back. I was very nervous today, but I brought the lead over the laps. "
