Volkswagen junior driver Andreas Mikkelsen led the rally after the first day. He won the first special stage of 1.9 kilometers ahead of Sébastien Ogier with 0.8 seconds and Ott Tänak with 2.2 seconds. At the start again, after a long break in the WRC, Henning Solberg with co-driver Ilka Minor , who drove with Evgeny Novikov last year . The veterans came in sixth place with a Ford Fiesta RS WRC .

Day 2 (Thursday, February 6th)

The second day of the Rally Sweden was dominated by the duel between Mikkelsen and Ogier (both VW). The special stages 3-6 were driven in the home of Mikkelsen, Norway. After the seventh special stage, Ogier was leading Mikkelsen by 5.8 seconds. In the fifth special stage, Ott Tänak (Ford) had the fastest time, but Jari-Matti Latvala (VW) was able to overtake him and finish the day in third. At the same time, Mads Østberg (Citroën) and Mikko Hirvonen (Ford) were in fifth place after the second day. Hyundai drivers Thierry Neuville and Juho Hänninen finished 7th and 8th respectively. In SS 5, Neuville showed the potential of the Hyundai i20 WRC and missed the fastest time by just half a second. Henning Solberg (Ford) dropped out of the top ten due to a puncture in SS 7 and was classified in 13th place in the evening.

3rd day (Friday, February 7th)

In the eighth special stage, the leader Ogier slipped off the road and got stuck in the snow. The reigning world champion lost around four minutes in this mishap. Mikkelsen and Latvala fought for the lead. Latvala took over the lead in the overall classification in the tenth special stage and did not give it up until the evening. Latvala led the rally by 4.8 seconds ahead of Mikkelsen and Østberg by 42.3 seconds. Hirvonen was the first Ford driver to follow in fourth place. Guest starter Henning Solberg won the 11th special stage and thus the first since the Rally Portugal 2009. Robert Kubica slipped twice from the lane and got stuck in the snow. The Ford Fiesta driver lost over twenty minutes on the top.

4th day (Saturday, February 8th)

Hyundai had a difficult third day and retired with both cars on Friday due to technical problems. Neuville and Hänninen were able to start again on Saturday thanks to the Rally 2 regulations . Mikkelsen (VW) hardly made any mistakes but Latvala (VW) kept the upper hand and won the Rally Sweden. Østberg (Citroën) had a solid performance over the days and finished third. Østberg only had to be angry on Friday when Kubica blocked him after a ride. Three additional world championship points for winning the Power Stage went to Østberg, two to Latvala and one to Hirvonen, who finished fourth as the best Ford driver. Ogier finished sixth and last overtook Solberg.
