Reports

Day 1 (Thursday, June 5th)

The first fastest time in the Rally Italy, the sixth round of the 2014 WRC World Rally Championship , went to Mikko Hirvonen (Ford). Hirvonen drove a time of 1: 19.1 minutes in the 1.3-kilometer special stage in the port of Cagliari. World champion Sébastien Ogier (Volkswagen) came in second together with Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) (+0.2 seconds).

Day 2 (Friday, June 6th)

The second day of the Rally Italy was tough. There were rollovers, accidents and fires. Fortunately, everyone involved was unharmed. Juho Hänninen and Thierry Neuville each won a special stage with the Hyundai i20 and were in the lead after four special stages. Hänninen overturned in SS 4, there was no longer any possibility of continuing. Neuville lost over 20 minutes in the same stage due to a technical defect. On the link between the special stages three and four of caught Ford Fiesta RS WRC of Mikko Hirvonen fire and burned completely. The Volkswagen driver Jari-Matti Latvala took the lead from SS 5. He won five special stages and teammate Sébastien Ogier won two. At the end of the day, the first two finishers were separated by 22.4 seconds. In third place Mads Østberg in the Citroën DS3 WRC, 33.7 seconds behind the leading Latvala.

3rd day (Saturday, June 7th)

In special stage 13, Latvala lost the rear of the car in a corner and damaged a tire. When changing wheels, Latvala lost over 2 minutes. Ogier took the lead and Østberg inherited second place (+ 1.40.2 minutes) ahead of Latvala, who, more than 2 minutes behind, crossed the finish line in third place. In an accident, Robert Kubica damaged the right front suspension of the Ford Fiesta, which meant the end. Until then (SS 12) Kubica had held fifth place.

4th day (Sunday, June 8th)

The last ten rallies were all won by Sébastien Ogier and Jari-Matti Latvala in the Volkswagen Polo R WRC , a new record in the World Rally Championship. Ogier and Latvala dominated the sixth world championship run, they fought a close duel until Latvala lost a few minutes due to a puncture in the 13th special stage. Mads Østberg ( Citroën DS3 WRC ) finished second in 1: 23.1 minutes behind Ogier. He was satisfied with this result because it is his best result in the WRC since his victory at the 2012 Rally Portugal . Henning Solberg made his third guest start this year and finished seventh with a solid drive. Robert Kubica dropped out due to an accident on Saturday evening. On Sunday he started again under the Rally 2 regulations and finished eighth. Fifth place would have been possible without his mishap. In the drivers' championship, Ogier is 33 points ahead of Latvala. In the manufacturers' standings, the cushion from Volkswagen to Citroën is 118 points.

“We delivered a great rally and I can't wait for the rest of the season. Now we want podium places, of course. "
