The 50th Rally Catalonia (Spain) took place from October 23 to 26, 2014. A total of 17 special stages were driven on asphalt and gravel.

Reports

Day 1 (Thursday, October 23)

On the first of 17 special stages in which the drivers drove 3.2 kilometers through Barcelona , Andreas Mikkelsen set the fastest time in the Volkswagen Polo R WRC . Mikkelsen needed 3: 39.1 minutes for the short section and was 1.8 seconds ahead of team-mate Sébastien Ogier. Thierry Neuville (+2.9 seconds) was third with the Hyundai i20 WRC behind the leaders.

Day 2 (Friday, October 24th)

Sébastien Ogier (VW) won three of six special stages on the second day of the Rally Spain and was in the lead in the evening. His lead on team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala , who had set-up problems, was 36.6 seconds. Mads Østberg (Citroën) was just 0.6 seconds behind Latvala, followed by Andreas Mikkelsen a further tenth of a second. Østberg struggled with the course of Friday, because twice he lost time behind a vehicle slowly driving ahead. Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) won a special stage in the World Rally Championship for the first time . In the afternoon, Neuville (Hyundai) was the fastest on the second round of the special stage (6 / Pesells 2). But the joy about the best times did not last long, on the next special stage both lost time due to accidents.

3rd day (Saturday, October 25th)

Latvala beat defending champion Ogier with one to four best times in the special stages of the day and shortened the gap by 9.3 to a total of 27.3 seconds. Mikkelsen experienced a setback in the third Volkswagen. In the middle of a thrilling duel with Mikko Hirvonen (Ford) for third place in the overall standings, he got braked with a puncture. He finished seventh and Hirvonen third in the evening.

Quote from Sébastien Ogier: “I have to congratulate Jari-Matti Latvala, he did a good job. The plan was to control from the front, but there were also passages where I had to drive very fast to keep up with him. He flew, but my plan was to have a 20-second lead tonight and we more than met that goal. "

4th day (Sunday, October 26th)

Sebastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia (Volkswagen) won the rally and were therefore determined to be the 2014 season drivers' world champions before the last rally of the season in Great Britain. Teammate Jari-Matti Latvala missed the opportunity to keep the world championship open until the season finale with second place in Spain. With a good performance over all competition days, Mikko Hirvonen (Ford) was able to climb onto the podium in third place.

Quote Sébastien Ogier: "It is a confirmation and shows that the first title was not a coincidence."
