(37471) Popocatepetl is an asteroid of the inner main belt that was discovered on October 17, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .
The orbit data of the asteroid indicate belonging to the Hungaria group . The 9: 2 orbital resonance with the planet Jupiter is characteristic of this group. The namesake for the Hungaria group is the asteroid (434) Hungaria . The solar orbit of (37471) Popocatepetl is strongly inclined at more than 22 ° compared to the ecliptic of the solar system, another characteristic of Hungaria asteroids.
(37471) Popocatepetl was named on October 29, 2012 after Popocatépetl , a 5462 meter high twin volcano in central Mexico , which is also the second highest mountain in the country.
