Rally Portugal
The Rally Portugal is one of the largest sports events held in Portugal. The rally took place for the first time in 1968 and, from 1973, had world championship status for an initial 29 years . From 2002 to 2006 she was not on the World Cup calendar. The course of the route, with which the rally belongs to the FIA World Rally Championship again from 2007 , no longer had any similarities to the original course. Instead of driving in the region around Porto , the Algarve was driven mainly on gravel roads. In 2015 they returned to the north of Portugal .
The main organizers of the Rally Portugal are the Federação Portuguesa de Automobilismo e Karting (FPAK) and the Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP).
history
The Rally Portugal was held for the first time in 1967. It was part of the 1973 WRC premier season . In the beginning, the rally was a mix of different road surfaces. After bad weather in 2001 made the roads dangerous and unpredictable, as the choice of tires was extremely difficult, the organizers decided to only drive on gravel roads in the future. After a five-year absence from the World Rally Championship calendar, the event returned from the north to the Algarve and was back on the WRC calendar in 2007 . The Rally Portugal has been named the best rally in the world five times. In 2020 the Rally Portugal was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .
New route from 2015
The Rally Portugal returns to the north of Portugal for the first time since 2001 and takes place in Matosinhos north of Porto . On Thursday evening there will be a "Super Special Stage", which is particularly spectator-friendly, on the rallycross circuit in Lousada . The first full day of the rally takes the drivers further north to the Ponte de Lima area near the Spanish border. The special stages on Saturday are the longest of the rally (SS 10 and 13 with 37.62 kilometers) and will be driven south near Amarante . Three special stages will be held on Sunday, with the focus on the classic "Fafe" special stage, which is run twice. The second run of the special stage is considered a power stage .
winner
The most successful drivers so far in the Rally Portugal are Markku Alén with five wins (1975, 1977, 1978, 1981 and 1987) and Sébastien Ogier (2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2017). Miki Biasion was the only driver to win the Rally Portugal three times in a row (1988–1990).
