Simo Lampinen (born June 22, 1943 in Porvoo ) is a former Finnish rally driver .

Career

Shortly after he received his driver's license at the age of 17, Simo Lampinen's rally career began. He won his first major international rally at the age of 20 when he won the 1000 Lakes Rally on a Saab 93 Sport in 1963 . In the same year he won the overall ranking of the Finnish rally championship and was able to repeat this success a year later.

In the 1960s, Lampinen was a Saab works driver and won the 1000 Lakes Rally two more times (1964 and 1972) with the 96. With his successes at the RAC Rally 1968, the Rally Portugal 1970 and the Rally Morocco 1972 he was able to win three more rally world championship races.

Lampinen was active as a driver until 1979 and was a driver for the works teams of Lancia , Peugeot and Triumph . After the end of his active career, he was racing director at the 1000 Lakes Rally and racing instructor at Saab for many years.

Lampinen once also competed in the 24-hour race at Le Mans . In 1965 he drove a Triumph Spitfire together with the Swiss Jean-Jacques Thuner in 13th place overall.
