Hillclimb Ollon-Villars 1965

The small Swiss town of Ollon was the starting point for the hill climb

The hill climb Ollon-Villars 1965 , also known as the Grand Mountain Prize of Switzerland, Ollon-Villars , was a hill climb that was held on August 29th. The race was the 17th round of the sports car world championship this year.

The race

The race on the mountain road from Ollon to Villars-sur-Ollon in the Swiss canton of Vaud was part of the sports car world championship for the second time since 1963 . Four hill climbs received World Championship status this year ; the event in Switzerland was the fourth. The race on Rossfeld was won by the new Porsche works driver Gerhard Mitter in the 904/8 Bergspyder . The Bolzano hill climb ended with an Abarth double success; Herbert Demetz won ahead of his team-mate Leo Cella . At the top of the Schauinsland pass , Ludovico Scarfiotti achieved a Ferrari success in the Dino 206P . After the accident at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1955 , a ban on circuit racing came into force in Switzerland . Hill climbs were exempt from this ban. These events were particularly popular with drivers and spectators, which led to large starting fields and many visitors.

Mitter and Scarfiotti were also the protagonists in Ollon. At Porsche, a new Bergspyder chassis was built for Gerhard Mitter in the racing department in Zuffenhausen . Since the works council forbade any weekend work, the car had to be brought to the race without being coordinated. Despite this handicap, Mitter drove two strong races and only had to admit defeat Scarfiotti by 5.2 seconds. Scarfiotti's team-mate Giampiero Biscaldi in a Ferrari 275P2 came in third .

The most prominent starter was Jim Clark , who was on the way to the second Formula 1 world title after the triumph of 1963 . Clark competed in the Lotus 38 , the racing car with which he won the Indianapolis 500 mile race in 1965 . In practice he drove the absolute best time; in the race he dropped out in the second run.
