Peter Westbury (born May 26, 1938 in London , † December 7, 2015 in Scarborough , Trinidad and Tobago ) was a British automobile racing driver .
Career
Peter Westbury's career was divided into two phases. In the first half the Briton was one of the best British hill climbers , in the second he tried to gain a foothold in circuit racing .
Westbury began driving hill climbs in 1962, initially in a Cooper powered by a Daimler engine. In 1963, Westbury built the V8 engine into a Felday chassis (owned by the company) and from then on dominated the British Hill Climb Championship for two years. He became superior champions in both 1963 and 1964, racing a new racing car, a Ferguson 4WD, in 1964.
In 1965, Westbury concentrated on building up his company and only drove uphill races sporadically. In 1967 he got a Brabham BT21 in the Formula 3 a. The initial phase was promising. Westbury won the races at Silverstone , Chimay and Clermont-Ferrand . In 1968 he repeated his success in Chimay and also won the race in Reims .
In 1969 Westbury switched to Formula 2 and drove all rounds for the European Championship with a Brabham BT30 . The greatest successes were second place at the Lottery Grand Prix in Monza and fifth place at the race in Hockenheim . His only appearance in Formula 1 results from the same year . At the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring , the field of Formula 1 vehicles was increased with Formula 2 cars. Westbury was fifth in the Formula 2 classification and ninth overall with his Brabham.
At the 1970 US Grand Prix in Watkins Glen , he got the opportunity to drive a factory BRM . Westbury failed with the BRM P153, however, in the qualification and could not take part in the race.
In 1970 and 1971 Westbury continued to compete in Formula 2, but the career did not develop any further. In 1973 he therefore announced his retirement from racing.
