1000 km race on the Nürburgring in 1967
The 13th 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , also ADAC 1000 km race Nürburgring, World Championship race, Nürburgring , took place on May 28, 1967 on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring and was the sixth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
Teams, vehicles and drivers
The big absentee of the 1967 1000 km race were the Scuderia Ferrari prototypes . At the instruction of Enzo Ferrari, the Scuderia race management concentrated almost entirely on the Le Mans 24-hour race two weeks later . There they wanted to eradicate the severe defeat suffered in 1966 . Last year Ford celebrated a triple victory at the Circuit des 24 Heures . All Ferrari works cars were eliminated prematurely. Ferrari racing director Franco Lini had nevertheless come to practice in a racing car. For Günter Klass and Ludovico Scarfiotti one was Ferrari Dino 246 S prepared. After a few laps in the first practice session, the car was reloaded in the van due to alleged problems with a cylinder of the 2.4-liter V6 engine and the Scuderia trunk team left before the start of the race. None of the private 412Ps found their way to the Eifel either. The Scuderia Filipinetti also reported a 6-cylinder dinosaur. Also, the 206S of Herbert Müller and Jean Guichet did not take part in the race. During a training lap by Guichet, leaking gasoline ignited the engine. Guichet could stop and get out, but the dino burned out.
Porsche came to the race with a large team . As with the Targa Florio , the works team divided the 910 into the driver teams based on the engine. The 910 with the 2.2-liter eight - cylinder boxer engines started in the prototype class over 2 liters and were driven by the teams Gerhard Mitter / Lucien Bianchi , Rolf Stommelen / Kurt Ahrens and Jo Siffert / Hans Herrmann . Three 2-liter six-cylinder 910s were registered in the prototype class up to 2 liter displacement and controlled by Udo Schütz / Joe Buzzetta , Paul Hawkins / Gerhard Koch and Jochen Neerpasch / Vic Elford .
John Wyer reported two Mirage M1s on behalf of his team. After the departure of Alan Rees , who had had an argument with race director David Yorke before the 1000 km race at Spa-Francorchamps and was leaving, Yorke was looking for a new teammate for Jacky Ickx and hired Richard Attwood . The second M1, which had a 5 liter Weslake V8 engine , was driven by David Piper and Dick Thompson . This vehicle was also unable to take part in the race because Thompson damaged it so badly in an accident during practice that it could no longer be repaired for the race. Chaparral had won the 1000 km race last year with the Chaparral 2D and the drivers Jo Bonnier and Phil Hill . In 1967 Hill drove the 2F, which was equipped with a powerful rear wing . Teammate was Mike Spence . An interesting car was the Lola T70 Mk.3 GT from John Surtees . Surtees owned the car, which he used with the support of the Lola factory team. The special thing about this T70 was the engine. In contrast to the conventional Chevrolet units, this Lola had an Aston Martin V8 engine . Second driver was David Hobbs . After the racing debut of the Alfa Romeo T33 at the Targa Florio, Autodelta , Alfa Romeo's racing department , also used the new prototypes at the Nürburgring. Three cars were entrusted to the drivers Roberto Bussinello , Teodoro Zeccoli , Andrea de Adamich , Nanni Galli , Giacomo Russo and Giancarlo Baghetti .
The course of the race
Some renovation work was carried out on the route in the spring. The Tiergarten section of the route , just before the start and finish straight, was affected by the construction work . The road was leveled and the curve radii changed to significantly slow the speed of the racing cars before they could get past the pits. The intervention extended the runway by 25 meters. Phil Hill achieved the fastest training time in the Chaparral with 8: 31.900 minutes. Closest to him was John Surtees in the Lola, who drove a time of 8: 39.600 minutes.
The Le Mans start , which had long been controversial among many drivers , caused unrest in the large starting field at the start of the race. On the one hand, some Porsche and Alfa Romeo drivers ran to their cars too early, and on the other hand, the fastest drivers started the race poorly. Phil Hill couldn't start the chaparral at first and then drove off slowly so as not to risk a collision with a slower vehicle. John Surtees in Lola and Jacky Ickx in Mirage also got off to a bad start. On the back straight, five Porsches were in the lead. Jo Siffert held the lead in front of Rolf Stommelen, Gerhard Mitter, Jochen Neerpasch and Paul Hawkins. During the first round, Phil Hill struggled with constantly aufgeblendetem light through the field and found at the beginning of the second revolution following the Porsche. John Surtees and Jacky Ickx also continuously improved their position. Hill already drove the fastest race lap on the second lap with 8: 42.100 and at the end of the second lap around the ring was already in third place, just behind Stommelen. In the sports car category , the Porsche 906 registered by Sten Axelsson and driven by Ben Pon at the time led ahead of Jo Schlesser in the Ford-France - GT40 .
In the course of the third lap, Hill passed Stommelen and began to reduce the gap to the leading Siffert. The performance of John Surtees ended in the sixth round after a spring break on the Lola. Hill caught up with Siffert on lap eight and took the lead past him. In third place was Mitter, ahead of Ickx in the Mirage. After the first quarter of the total distance, the first scheduled refueling stops and driver changes began. The leading Hill gave the chaparral to Mike Spence. An endless amount of time passed because the hot engine would not start. When Spence was finally able to drive off, strange noises indicated that something was wrong with the vehicle. Spence could only drive slowly through the south bend and turned back into the pits after the back straight. Since this procedure was not covered by the regulations, the team was disqualified. It would not have been possible to continue driving because of a gearbox damage. Siffert's partner, Hans Herrmann, didn't get very far either. After only one lap in the car, he had to park the Porsche 910 due to a defective valve train.
A new duel for the overall lead broke out between Lucien Bianchi, Mitter's partner, and Richard Attwood in the Mirage. Attwood caught up strongly against the Porsche, but retired on lap 29 after damage to two tires; he had driven over stones on the side of the track. Due to the pit stops, the Porsche works cars remaining in the race took turns at the top. The decision was made on the last lap, when the leader, who was in the lead, rolled out on the last lap due to a defective alternator. As a result, Udo Schütz and Joe Buzzetta won in the six-cylinder 910. Mitter and Bianchi were classified fourth.
