Théodore Jacques René "Teddy" Pilette (born July 26, 1942 in Brussels ) is a former Belgian racing driver . In 1974 and 1977 he was registered for a total of four Formula 1 Grand Prix, but was only able to qualify once.
Career
Just like his father André , who competed in nine Formula 1 races in the 1950s and 60s, and his great-uncle Théodore , who finished fifth in the Indianapolis 500 in 1913, Teddy Pilette decided to pursue a motorsport career. Pilette attended the "Jim Russell Racing School" in England, which gave him the opportunity to take on extra roles as a racing driver in the films Grand Prix and Le Mans .
In 1973 Pilette won the European Formula 5000 Championship in a Chevron B24 , which he repeated in a Lola T400 in 1975. He also took part in the American Formula 5000, which enabled him to participate in the Indianapolis 500 in 1977. Pilette missed qualifying for the race.
Pilette made his first, but only brief, stopover in Formula 1 in 1974 at his home Grand Prix, the Belgian Grand Prix , in a Brabham BT42 . He qualified for the race in 27th place on the grid and finished it in 17th. Pilette made his second appearance in Formula 1 in 1977 for the now unsuccessful BRM team , although he missed qualifying for the race on all three race weekends. He was the last driver who competed for the traditional British racing team on a racing weekend.
1978 won Pilette together with Gordon Spice , the Spa 24 Hours , which represented the peak of his motorsports career.
At the beginning of the 1990s, Pilette was a team manager in Formula Ford and a designer in German Formula 3 .
