6 Hours of Silverstone 1978
The 1978 Silverstone 6-hour race , also known as the Silverstone World Manufacturers 6 Hours, Silverstone , took place on May 14th at the Silverstone Circuit and was the sixth round of the World Sports Car Championship of that year.
The race
At the endurance race at Silverstone, the factory cars from Porsche and BMW met for the first time in the 1978 World Sports Car Championship . Under the leadership of Norbert Singer and Manfred Jantke , a completely new Group 5 prototype was developed and built at Porsche. The Porsche 935/78 was based on the Porsche 911 SC and was given the nickname Moby-Dick by the factory mechanics because of its large dimensions and white base paint . The new 3.2-liter six - cylinder boxer engine developed a maximum of 620 kW (845 hp) at a speed of 8200 rpm with two turbochargers. At the debut at Silverstone the new Porsche was clearly superior to the competition. In free practice, Jochen Mass regularly drove five seconds faster than in his pole position the year before . Qualification training and races went smoothly. With partner Jacky Ickx , Mass was consistently at the top of the race. The lead over the second-placed Kremer -935 of Bob Wollek and Henri Pescarolo was seven laps at the finish.
The works BMW 320i Turbo with a 2-liter turbo engine, driven by Ronnie Peterson and Hans-Joachim Stuck , also had no chance against the Porsche. Starting from sixth training position in the race, the two Formula 1 drivers drove the BMW up to second place in the overall standings, but were several laps behind the lead vehicle when it failed due to a defect in the injection system. The race was a disaster for Georg Loos' team . All three Porsche 935 / 77A cars were down after an accident and technical defects.
