Norbert Singer (born November 16, 1939 ) is a German graduate engineer in mechanical engineering and aerospace technology and a former engineer, project manager and operations manager at Porsche .

His outstanding achievements include the 16 overall victories in the Le Mans 24-hour race , which he achieved as a racing engineer at Porsche between 1970 and 1998.

Career

Norbert Singer studied at the Technical University of Munich and completed his studies as a mechanical engineer specializing in aerospace technology.

On March 1, 1970, he began his professional career at Porsche in the racing department. There he worked in the Le Mans project on the transmission ventilation of the 917 , which later also brought Porsche the first overall Le Mans victory . Singer then headed the development project for the Porsche 911 Carrera RSR Turbo 2.1 , with which Porsche achieved second place in the overall standings in the 1974 Le Mans 24-hour race .

He became known through the development of the two Porsche racing cars 935 and 936 , which were very successful in the sports car world championship , IMSA GT championship and in Le Mans from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s and won many victories and championship titles.

With the Group C vehicles 956 and the successor 962 , Singer introduced an aluminum monocoque for the first time in Porsche racing cars . Also new was the use of so-called ground effect (ground effect) in sports car prototype by a special design of the vehicle underbody. These racing cars dominated the races in which they were used and from 1982 to 1994 Porsche won seven Le Mans races, five 24-hour races in Daytona and achieved six world championship titles in the drivers 'championship and five in the manufacturers' championship. In the US IMSA series, the 962 won four championship titles.

Singer achieved his 16th and last overall victory at Le Mans as a race engineer in 1998 with the Porsche 911 GT1 '98 .

After 2004, he left Porsche. Since 2011 he has been advising the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO), among other things, on the Le Mans 24-hour race and is still a regular visitor to racing events.
