Jacques Bernard "Jacky" Ickx (born January 1, 1945 in Brussels ) is a former Belgian Formula 1 and sports car racing driver.
He is considered to be by far the most successful all-round racing driver , as he competed in a wide variety of motorsport disciplines and won victories in his more than 30 years of active time .
Career
Jacky Ickx is the son of the Belgian motor journalist Jacques Ickx. Ickx made his entry into motorsport with motorcycle races . In 1963 he became Belgian Trial Champion on a Zündapp .
In 1966 he switched from a motorcycle to a racing car and was able to immediately achieve several victories in endurance races , such as the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps with Hubert Hahne in a BMW 2000TI . In 1967 he was the first European Formula 2 champion in a Matra MS7 Cosworth , the later Formula 3000 and today's GP2 championship. His first appearance in a Formula 1 Grand Prix was in 1966 in the Ken Tyrrell team with a Formula 2 Matra MS6 Cosworth at the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. In 1967 he drove for Ken Tyrrell in a 1.6 liter Matra MS7-Cosworth Formula 2, also at the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, before driving a Cooper - Maserati at the Italian and US Grands Prix. In Monza, Ickx achieved his first World Championship point with sixth place.
In 1968 Ickx switched to Ferrari and celebrated his first Grand Prix victory on July 7, 1968 at the rainy French Grand Prix in Rouen. At the age of 23 he was the second youngest driver to win a Grand Prix after Bruce McLaren . McLaren was 22 years old when he won his first win in 1959. Between 1968 and 1979 Ickx achieved eight Grand Prix victories in 114 Formula 1 races and was twice vice world champion (1969 and 1970). He also won other Formula 1 races that were not part of the world championship (1971 Jochen Rindt memory race in Hockenheim in a Ferrari and 1974 Race of Champions in Brands Hatch in a Lotus). In 1979 he won Can-Am on Lola.
His successes at the 24 Hours of Le Mans are legendary , where he won a Ford GT 40 in 1969 despite his slow strike against the starting sequence (see Le Mans start ) and was able to achieve five more victories by 1982 and was nicknamed " Monsieur Mans " received. This record was only surpassed in 2005 by Tom Kristensen . There were also numerous victories in touring car races , hill climbs and rallies , including winning the 1983 Paris-Dakar rally with actor Claude Brasseur as a passenger in a Mercedes-Benz G-model. In addition, Ickx won the endurance world championship in 1982 and 1983. This makes Jacky Ickx the most successful sports car racing driver.
On September 1, 1985, Ickx collided with the German Stefan Bellof at the 1000 km race for sports cars in Spa-Francorchamps ( Belgium ) in the corner of Eau Rouge , who died as a result of the accident. Allegedly he had n't seen it despite several flag signs that indicated that a faster driver wanted to overtake. The accusation that Ickx purposely pushed the faster Bellof away could never be proven.
Until 1995 he drove rallies and sports car championships. In the mid-1990s, Ickx withdrew from active motorsport, but remained associated with this sport as the organizer of various races.
Private
Ickx was married twice and has a total of five children, including daughter Vanina , who is also dedicated to racing. He lives with his wife, the singer Khadja Nin , in Ohain near Waterloo south of Brussels .

1 Ickx started with team-mate Pescarolo. After the failure of this car on lap 45, he was ordered to join the sister team to reinforce the Barth / Haywood duo.
2 After the team Ickx / Pescarolo / Mass retired, Ickx switched to the sister team Wollek / Barth.
