The Dutch Grand Prix 1973 took place on July 27th at Circuit Park Zandvoort and was the tenth race of the 1973 Automobile World Championship .
Reports
background
After a year break due to safety deficiencies, a Dutch Grand Prix was again added to the racing calendar in 1973. The route from Zandvoort had meanwhile been re-asphalted and equipped with guard rails and run-off zones. In addition, a chicane had been added to the route layout in order to slow down the vehicles in what was once a very fast section.
After the pile-up at the British Grand Prix two weeks earlier, the teams struggled to repair their vehicles on time. This was particularly true of the Surtees team , whose three vehicles were all damaged in the accident. The team then appeared in Zandvoort with only two cars, which meant that Jochen Mass's second assignment was postponed to the German GP .
Andrea de Adamich could not compete because of his leg injuries and finally decided to end his Formula 1 career for good.
Ferrari did not take part in the race due to the moderate competitiveness of the current 312B3 car .
As has been customary since Nanni Galli retired after the Monaco Grand Prix , the second vehicle in Frank Williams' team was available for a paying guest starter. Gijs van Lennep used this opportunity to take part in his home Grand Prix.
training
During Saturday's training session, Emerson Fittipaldi suffered a setback in the fight for the world title by crashing and injuring himself. The lap time he achieved on Friday only enabled him to finish 16th on the grid. His team-mate Ronnie Peterson again demonstrated the competitiveness of the Lotus 72 by qualifying for pole position for the sixth time this season. Beside him, the two Tyrrell of Fittipaldi's main competitor Jackie Stewart and François Cevert started from the front row.
The second set was divided McLaren -Pilot Denny Hulme with the Brabham of Carlos Reutemann . Behind them, Hulmes team mate Peter Revson qualified ahead of James Hunt in the customer march of the Hesketh team and the Surtees works driver Carlos Pace .
run
Peterson converted his pole position into a lead, while behind him Stewart was followed by Carlos Pace, who had started well from the third row. Emerson Fittipaldi retired after the second lap because the injuries sustained the day before were too painful. On the sixth lap, Cevert pushed Pace from third place.
On the eighth lap, Roger Williamson hit the crash barriers violently, presumably as a result of a puncture. His March 731 then overturned, slid across the track and caught fire. David Purley , who was an eyewitness to the accident, stopped immediately to help his colleague trapped in the burning vehicle. Since the marshals were not equipped with heat-resistant clothing, no one helped him in attempting to put the car on its side on its wheels. The use of the only fire extinguisher located at the scene of the accident also failed. The race was not interrupted. Since the other drivers did not see Purley's parked car, they erroneously assumed that the burning vehicle was Purley's and did not stop to provide assistance, as they could see Purley unharmed at the scene of the accident. Onlookers called for help were prevented by police officers with dogs from entering the route. Williamson eventually burned to death in his vehicle. His body was only recovered after the race had been driven to an almost unaffected end.
The entire rescue attempt had been seen on television. David Purley was later honored with the George Medal for his courageous efforts .
Peterson held the lead until the 63rd round. Then he had to let the two Tyrrell from Stewart and Cevert pass due to transmission problems and a little later he dropped out completely. As a result, James Hunt achieved the first podium finish in his Formula 1 career. The local guest starter Gijs van Lennep achieved a world championship point in sixth place.
