Reports
background
In order to be able to contest his home Grand Prix, Michael Bleekemolen bought into the cockpit of the second ATS alongside Jochen Mass with the support of his own sponsor . Moreover returned Danny Ongais the wheel of a private Shadow DN9 the team Interscope Racing for the last time in Formula 1 back. For the third time this season, Bruno Giacomelli received a third McLaren works car.
training
Due to the strong field of participants with 33 pilots, a pre-qualification was carried out. For Rolf Stommelen , Harald Ertl and Danny Ongais the race weekend ended prematurely. Four other pilots failed to qualify during regular training because there were only 26 starting places available for the race. However, since Rupert Keegan had an accident in the warm-up before the race and was injured, Arturo Merzario , who was actually not qualified, was allowed to move up.
The front row was again formed by the two Lotus factory drivers, with Mario Andretti being around six tenths of a second faster than Ronnie Peterson . With a lap time around a second slower than the pole setter, Niki Lauda qualified for third place in front of the two Ferrari team- mates Carlos Reutemann and Gilles Villeneuve . Jacques Laffite finished sixth on the grid.
run
While Andretti took the lead in front of Peterson and the well-started Laffite, Riccardo Patrese and Didier Pironi collided further down the field . A few other pilots were indirectly involved in the accident, as they had to abruptly try to avoid Patrese's vehicle, which was parked in the middle of the route.
The two Lotus pilots extended their lead. Meanwhile, Lauda was back in third place as Laffite fell behind him and behind Carlos Reutemann, John Watson , Emerson Fittipaldi and Gilles Villeneuve due to technical problems . This order then remained constant until Reutemann fell behind Watson and Fittipaldi on lap 38 due to tire problems.
Andretti and Peterson secured another Lotus double victory in front of the two Brabham from Lauda and Watson. Fittipaldi was fifth ahead of Villeneuve, who overtook his team-mate Reutemann on the 54th lap and thus secured the last championship point of the day.
With now 12 points behind Andretti, Peterson still had theoretical title chances, but due to his contractually regulated number two status, he was not allowed to dispute the title from the American. With a 28-point lead over Lauda, who was third in the World Cup, with three races still to go, in which a maximum of 27 points could be achieved, Andretti was virtually the 1978 World Champion.
