The 1978 Canadian Grand Prix took place on October 8th in Montreal as the 16th and final race of the 1978 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
Since the Mosport International Raceway , on which the Canadian Grand Prix had taken place in previous years, no longer met the then current safety requirements, the organizers decided to host the race from 1978 on the Circuit Île Notre-Dame in Montreal. After the 1976 Olympic Games, this was created on an artificial island in the St. Lawrence River , which was part of the site of Expo 67 .
Nelson Piquet , who had already signed a Brabham factory driver contract for the 1979 season, was allowed to drive a third car for his new team as a guest starter . This had already been planned for the previous weekend at the US East Grand Prix , but could not be implemented in the short time available.
The Ensign Racing team completed the last race of the season with just one vehicle for Derek Daly . Riccardo Patrese , whose participation in the US Grand Prix had been denied due to his alleged guilt in the mass accident at the Italian Grand Prix , returned to the field.
training
Due to the relatively narrow track, the number of starters for the race was limited to 22 pilots. Despite 28 candidates present, there was no pre-qualification.
The training took place partly in humid conditions.
Jean-Pierre Jarier achieved the third and final pole position of his Formula 1 career with a lap time of just one hundredth of a second faster than Jody Scheckter . Local hero Gilles Villeneuve and John Watson took the second row ahead of Alan Jones and Emerson Fittipaldi . Niki Lauda and Hans-Joachim Stuck formed the fourth row.
run
The weather on race day was cool but dry. Jarier took the lead from pole ahead of Scheckter, Jones and Villeneuve. During the first lap, Scheckter briefly deviated from the racing line in a corner , which put Jones inside to take second place. Further down the field, Stuck spun and collided with Fittipaldi. Jacques Laffite , who suddenly had to avoid the two, fell back to the end of the field. Fittipaldi was unable to continue the race due to excessive damage to his car. Stuck headed for the pits, but had to give up there too.
In the duel for fifth place, Mario Andretti and John Watson collided in the sixth round. As a result, they fell back to positions 17 and 18. Patrick Depailler then took fifth place . When he had to pit shortly afterwards to change tires, Carlos Reutemann took fifth place ahead of Derek Daly.
When Jones dropped back on lap 18 due to a tire problem, Villeneuve managed to get past him and Scheckter into second place. He had no real chance of overtaking Jarier, who was leading by over 30 seconds, under normal circumstances. But on the 50th lap he had to go to the pits due to a brake defect and give up the race. As a result, Villeneuve was able to celebrate its first Grand Prix victory in front of a home crowd, of all places. Behind Reutemann, Scheckter, Patrese and Depailler, Daly secured the first championship point of his Formula 1 career in sixth place.
