The 2012 Canadian Grand Prix took place on June 10th at the Gilles-Villeneuve Circuit in Montreal and was the seventh race of the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the Monaco Grand Prix , Fernando Alonso led the drivers' standings by 3 points over Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber . In the construction standings, Red Bull-Renault led with 38 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 60 points ahead of Ferrari .

The FIA clarified the technical regulations before the Grand Prix. The trigger was a hole in the underbody of the Red Bull RB8 , the conformity of which had been questioned by several teams. The FIA statement said: “ After a few discussions in Monaco where it became clear that there were some misunderstandings, we think it is important to say that we have a clear view that there are no holes in the underbody panel allowed to. It was argued that it was not explicitly described that a hole should not be located 450 mm behind the cockpit in the underbody plate and that it was therefore legal. However, we do not share this view and find that holes in this area are not allowed. If this were legal, Article 3.12.5 would be superfluous. "

At the Canadian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

With Michael Schumacher (seven times), Lewis Hamilton (twice), Kimi Räikkönen , Alonso and Jenson Button (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

José Abed (MEX), Martin Donnelly (GBR) and Gerd Ennser (DEU) acted as race commissioners .

For the first time in years, the event was not sold out. One reason for this was student protests in Montreal. For safety reasons, the traditional “open house” day on the Thursday before the race, where fans usually had free access to the paddock and pit lane, was canceled.

training

Kovalainen's car crashed in first free practice

The first free practice session was interrupted shortly after half-time because Heikki Kovalainen had an accident at Turn 10. Hamilton was the fastest pilot ahead of Vettel and Nico Rosberg . After training, an overtaking maneuver by Vettel against Bruno Senna was investigated. Vettel overtook Senna before turn 14 and left him little space, which is why Senna had to swerve to the left and leave the track a little. During this maneuver, Senna's front wing was damaged. The race stewards warned Vettel for this action, which in their opinion was too aggressive. There was also an incident involving the HRT box. Pedro de la Rosa caught his chief mechanic Craig Stubley with the front wing and knocked him to the ground. Stubley was admitted to hospital but was not seriously injured.

In the second free practice session, Hamilton was again the fastest ahead of Ferrari drivers Alonso and Felipe Massa . Ferrari used the training for some new parts. Among other things, they tested an exhaust similar to that of McLaren. Williams had introduced a new rear wing for this training day. The weather stayed dry throughout the training. It was interrupted by Senna after an accident. He had lost control of his vehicle at turn 15 and hit the so-called “Wall of Champions”. He was uninjured, but the car was badly damaged.

In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest lap ahead of Alonso and Hamilton. Rosberg and Jean-Éric Vergne retired at the beginning of the training, Rosberg with technical problems, Vergne after a driving error. Neither set time.

Qualifying

In the first section of qualifying, Vettel achieved the fastest lap. The HRT, Marussia and Caterham pilots and Vergne were eliminated.

In the second section, Pastor Maldonado , who was the last pilot to try to set a time , hit the "Wall of Champions" with his stern. He had previously set a best time in the first sector. Vettel was again the fastest pilot. In addition to Maldonado, the Sauber pilots as well as Senna, Daniel Ricciardo , Nico Hülkenberg and Räikkönen were eliminated.

In the final segment, Vettel set another best time and secured pole position in front of Hamilton and Alonso.

After qualifying, Maldonado had his gearbox changed, which earned him a five-position penalty.

run

Scene from the first lap of the race

At the start of the Canadian Grand Prix, Vettel kept the lead ahead of Hamilton, Alonso and Webber. Rosberg initially stayed fifth ahead of Massa, who put pressure on Rosberg. In the second lap, Massa managed to drive past Rosberg in the chicane before the start and finish, and in the next laps he pulls away a little. One lap later, Paul di Resta also passed Rosberg. In contrast to Massa, di Resta used the Drag Reduction System (DRS).

While Vettel moved away from Hamilton at the top, Massa spun in the seventh lap and fell back to twelfth place. Finally, on lap 13, Massa was the first driver to pit to change tires. He switched from the super soft to the soft tire compound. Di Resta and Schumacher followed a lap later with the same tire change. Button, who started on soft tires, pitted on super soft tires before the top group and switched to super soft tires.

After 15 laps, Vettel was the first driver from the top 4 to pit. Hamilton and Webber followed a lap later. Hamilton's stop did not go optimally, but he stayed ahead of Vettel. Alonso pitted three laps after Hamilton to change tires. Like the other drivers from the top group, he switched from super soft to soft tires. Alonso initially came back on the track before Hamilton, but the latter overtook him in the DRS zone. In the meantime in the lead was Romain Grosjean , who came to a stop one lap after Alonso.

Hamilton now led the race ahead of Alonso and Vettel. Behind them were Raikkonen, Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Pérez, three drivers who had not yet been to the pits. Kobayashi, who, unlike Raikkonen and Pérez, started on the super-soft mixture, pitted on lap 24. After 22 and 24 laps, respectively, the race was over for HRT drivers Narain Karthikeyan and de la Rosa. Both retired with braking problems.

At the top, Hamilton had slightly separated from Alonso and Vettel. A gap formed behind it on Raikkonen, Pérez and Webber. Although Webber had fresher tires, he couldn't get past his opponents. On lap 40, Raikkonen finally pitted for his only stop and switched to the super soft tires. One lap later, Pérez followed with the same tire change. Rosberg, who pitted for his second stop shortly before Raikkonen, first overtook Raikkonen and then passed Pérez. Rosberg's team-mate Schumacher dueled Kobayashi in midfield at this stage of the race. At first, Schumacher passed Kobayashi in the hairpin, but Kobayashi already overtook himself on the next straight. For Schumacher, however, the race was over soon afterwards, as his rear flight flap no longer closed. It was his fifth retirement in race seven.

On lap 50, Hamilton pitted for his second and final stop. He stayed on the softer tire compound. This stop was not optimal either and lost some time. Alonso took over the lead. He and Vettel fell by the wayside. Hamilton fell back to third place and always drove faster times than the leading duo over the next few laps. In the background there was a three-way duel between Massa, Pérez and Rosberg. Rosberg tried to overtake Massa on the DRS straight, but then had to shorten the chicane before the start and finish, which meant that he passed Massa. However, he had to let Massa pass again. Pérez took advantage of the situation and also overtook Rosberg. Shortly afterwards, Pérez also overtook Massa and took fifth position. After Rosberg had also overtaken Massa, he pitted for the second time and switched back to the super-soft tires. He fell back to tenth place. In the meantime, another pilot with braking problems, Timo Glock, had retired.

At the top, the times of Alonso and Vettel broke down more and more, which is why Hamilton passed both of them relatively easily and took the lead. Vettel finally decided to stop again, Alonso fell by the wayside. Vettel initially fell back to fifth place, but with the fresh tires was able to set the fastest race lap on the last lap. Alonso's times got slower and slower and he was overtaken by Grosjean, Pérez and Vettel on the following laps.

Hamilton eventually won the race ahead of Grosjean, Pérez, Vettel and Alonso. With this, Hamilton took over the world championship lead from Alonso, who dropped to second place. Grosjean and Pérez stood on the podium for the second time this season. The other points went to Rosberg, Webber, Räikkönen, Kobayashi and Massa. While Hamilton clinched his first win of the season, his teammate Button only finished in 16th place. After technical problems on Friday, Button was behind in training and was unable to make optimal use of the tires.

With Hamilton, the seventh driver won the seventh race of the season. This has never happened in any Formula 1 season.

In the constructors' championship, the first two positions remained unchanged. Ferrari lost third place to Lotus .
