The 2012 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 27 at the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo and was the sixth race of the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the Spanish Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with equal points from Fernando Alonso and 8 points from Lewis Hamilton . In the construction standings, Red Bull-Renault led with 11 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 25 points ahead of Lotus-Renault .

At the Monaco Grand Prix, Pirelli made the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red) available to the drivers , as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

With Michael Schumacher (five times), Alonso (twice), Kimi Räikkönen , Hamilton, Jenson Button , Mark Webber and Vettel (once each), seven former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were José Abed (MEX), Christian Calmes (MON), Paul Gutjahr (SUI) and Nigel Mansell (GBR).

training

The first day of training at the Monaco Grand Prix is traditionally Thursday. In the first free practice, Alonso posted the fastest lap ahead of Romain Grosjean and Sergio Pérez . The training was interrupted about nine minutes before the end and not restarted. The trigger was Heikki Kovalainen's engine failure at the tunnel exit. In the second free practice session, which was characterized by changing weather conditions, Button drove the fastest lap ahead of Grosjean and Felipe Massa .

Before training began, there was an accident on a grandstand on the harbor side. According to information from the organizers, a wooden floor in the stands broke, causing two people to fall. One of them is said to have sustained severe leg injuries.

In the third free practice session on Saturday, Nico Rosberg was the fastest driver ahead of Massa and Vettel. This training session was not ended normally either, but stopped shortly before the end, as Pastor Maldonado lost control of his vehicle in the casino and hit the boundary. A lap earlier, Maldonado had touched Sergio Pérez in front of the Portier corner . Pérez had let the faster Maldonado free the ideal line, but pulled so sharply inward that there was a contact. The race stewards rated this as unsportsmanlike and gave Maldonado a starting place penalty of ten positions.

Qualifying

The first segment was interrupted after four minutes. At the exit of the Louis Chiron, Pérez lost control of his vehicle because his front suspension was no longer intact and touched the boundary with the left side of the vehicle. As a result, his left rear wheel came loose and eventually rolled over the track. He tried to drive back to the pits, but stopped in the Rascasse. After the break, Nico Hülkenberg set the fastest lap. In addition to Pérez, the HRT , Marussia and Caterham pilots were eliminated. Since Pérez had not set time, he failed because of the 107 percent rule . However, he was subsequently admitted to the race.

In the second section, Jean-Éric Vergne collided with the wall at the exit of the tunnel. He suffered a suspension damage and the front wing pushed under his car, he slowly drove back to the pits, but did not drive another lap. Massa posted the fastest lap. The Toro Rosso and Force India pilots as well as Bruno Senna , Button and Kamui Kobayashi were eliminated. In the final segment, Schumacher drove the fastest lap. However, since he had received a starting place penalty of five positions for causing a collision in the last race, pole position went to Webber, who had the second fastest time. Rosberg started the race from second place, Hamilton from third.

After qualifying, the gearbox of Pérez and Maldonado was changed, which earned both a five-position penalty.

run

Webber kept the lead ahead of Rosberg and Hamilton at the start of the Grand Prix. Grosjean, who started the race from fourth place, collided with Schumacher, who started from sixth place. While Schumacher drove on, the race for Grosjean was over before the first corner. As a result of the Grosjean accident, there was unrest in the field, with Kobayashi taking off slightly. He initially drove on, but had to park the car in the pits after five laps. After initially no safety car phase had been initiated, the race management sent the safety car out on the track after the field drove past the Grosjean accident site for the first time. In addition to the Grosjean accident, there was also a collision between Maldonado and Pedro de la Rosa on the first lap , in which both drivers were eliminated.

At the restart, Webber again defended the lead in front of Rosberg, Hamilton, Alonso, Massa, Vettel, Raikkonen and Schumacher. Vettel was the only one of these drivers who had entered the race with the harder tire compound, while the others all used the softer compound. During this phase of the race, several teams expected rain to set in soon, which is why all the drivers tried to stay outside as long as possible so as not to have to change tires too often.

While Pérez passed Vergne and Timo Glock in the back of the field , Vitaly Petrow was eliminated with technical problems. In the meantime, a gap formed behind the sixth-placed Vettel, as Räikkönen was unable to set the times of the front group and overtaking maneuvers on the narrow street circuit are difficult. Behind Raikkonen were Schumacher, Hulkenberg and Senna, a small gap.

On the 27th lap, Rosberg started the pit stop phase from the leading group. He switched to the harder tire compound. Webber and Hamilton followed him a lap later, with the positions remaining unchanged. There were changes after Alonso was in the lead, pulling out a lead on Hamilton and overtaking him at the stop. Massa initially took the lead, but after his stop he lined up behind Hamilton and Schumacher, who was not yet in the pits. Vettel was now leading the race. Since he started on the harder tire compound, he was able to set faster times than his pursuers at first.

During his only planned pit stop, Pérez turned into the pits late and hindered Raikkonen, who lost a position. The race management then imposed a drive-through penalty on Pérez. In the meantime, Button, who had started from twelfth place on the harder tire, was in the pits and switched to the softer compound. He fell behind Kovalainen after his stop. Button was able not to let his opponent drive away, but he was unable to overtake.

Finally, Vettel pitted in the 46th lap. He switched to the softer tire compound and came back on track in fourth place ahead of Hamilton. At the top, all drivers managed not to let the person in front pull too far away, so that the first six were within ten seconds - mostly even less. Behind that there was a bigger gap to the rest of the field led by Schumacher.

While light rain set in, Schumacher was no longer able to keep up with the times of the other drivers. He eventually gave up with technical problems. One lap after him, the race for Charles Pic and Daniel Ricciardo also ended with technical defects. At the front, the first six drivers moved even closer together. On the 71st lap, sixth-placed Massa was only about three seconds behind leading Webber.

Although the track was no longer completely dry and no new personal bests were possible, only Vergne, who was initially in seventh place, risked a switch to intermediates . He didn't benefit from this change though and lost some positions as the dry tires were still faster. In an attempt to overtake Buttons against Kovalainen shortly before the end of the race, Button damaged his vehicle so badly that he gave up. Kovalainen damaged the front wing and had to pits for repairs.

Webber eventually won the race ahead of Rosberg, Alonso, Vettel, Hamilton and Massa. The first six pilots crossed the finish line within 6.2 seconds. The other points went to Paul di Resta , Hülkenberg, Räikkönen and Senna.

With Webber, the sixth driver won the sixth race of the season. This has never happened in any Formula 1 season.

At 6:45 p.m. local time, the FIA officially confirmed the result. Before the race, Ferrari and McLaren kept the option of protesting the result because they questioned the compliance of the Red Bull RB8's underbody . Red Bull had added a hole in the underbody of the RB8 just in front of the rear tires. In the end, however, no team protested the score. The system was first used at the 2012 Bahrain Grand Prix .

In the drivers' world championship, Alonso took the lead from Vettel, who dropped to second place and was now level on points with third-placed Webber. There were also shifts in the first three positions for the designers. Red Bull continued to lead ahead of McLaren, but Ferrari took third place from Lotus.

In the back part of the world championship there were also shifts in the teams and drivers without points. Kovalainen and Narain Karthikeyan achieved their best results of the season with places 13 and 15 respectively. Kovalainen therefore improved from 22nd to 19th place, Karthikeyan from 24th to 22nd place. In terms of design engineers, Caterham passed Marussia with Kovalainen's 13th place.
