The 1970 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 10th at the Circuit de Monaco and was the third race of the 1970 World Automobile Championship . In a readers' poll of the motorsport magazine Motorsport aktuell in December 2010, the Grand Prix was ranked second among the best Formula 1 races of all time .

Reports

background

The starting field showed only minor changes compared to the Spanish Grand Prix . One of them was Ronnie Peterson's Formula 1 debut in a privately entered March 701 .

At Lotus, based on experience gained at the Spanish Grand Prix and two weeks later at a race in Silverstone that was not part of the World Championship, the decision was made to replace the new, immature Type 72, the one that had been tried and tested for a long time and for almost three years used Lotus 49 to use. The new car was only moved a few laps in practice by John Miles .

training

The front row was formed by two March-Fords from Jackie Stewart and Chris Amon . Denis Hulme and Jack Brabham started behind .

run

Stewart used his pole position to take the lead. Behind him were Amon, Brabham, Ickx and Beltoise . The only change within the first six positions was initially an overtaking maneuver by Beltoise against Ickx, until both were eliminated with technical problems after a good quarter of the race distance. In the meantime, Brabham had overtaken Amon and fought for second place. Jackie Stewart's failure for technical reasons a few laps later put him in the lead without a fight. Amon and Hulme, now lying between the leader and Jochen Rindt , also had to give up, so that Rindt was nine seconds behind Brabham in the final phase of the race and steadily reduced this gap. In the very last corner of the race, Brabham braked while trying to lap some competitors and slipped into the straw bales on the edge of the track. Rindt dodged, passed by and won. As Brabham was only lightly hit, he was able to finish the race in second place in front of Henri Pescarolo .
