Reports
background
Due to safety deficiencies at the Nürburgring , which the drivers had criticized in advance, the race was not held there, but for the first time at the Hockenheimring. As a reaction to Jim Clark's fatal accident during a Formula 2 race two years earlier, this track, unlike the Nürburgring, had meanwhile been equipped with guard rails. In addition, two chicanes were added in the area of the long straight forest to reduce speeds. The east curve chicane that was added later, however, did not exist at the time.
Dan Gurney had ended his Formula 1 career two weeks before the race after the British Grand Prix and was replaced by Peter Gethin at McLaren .
training
Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni confirmed with starting positions one and three the upward trend at Ferrari , which was already noticeable for several races. They framed the World Cup leader Jochen Rindt in second place. The reigning world champion Jackie Stewart had to start from a disappointing seventh place for his standards.
Hubert Hahne , who was registered for the race as a private driver in his own March 701 , failed to qualify. It was his last attempt to take part in a Grand Prix. Silvio Moser , Andrea de Adamich and Brian Redman were also not allowed to start.
run
After the start, Ickx initially kept the lead over Rindt. Together with Jo Siffert , Chris Amon and Clay Regazzoni , a leadership quintet was formed that gave each other slipstream duels. Siffert could not keep up the pace and fell behind. After Regazzoni and Amon were eliminated after about three quarters of the race distance with technical defects, there was only a duel at the top between Rindt and Ickx, which Rindt narrowly won. Third placed Denis Hulme was around 80 seconds behind the two at the finish.
For Jochen Rindt it was the fourth victory in a row and his last Grand Prix victory.
