Hubert Hahne (born March 28, 1935 in Moers ; † April 24, 2019 in Düsseldorf ) was a German racing driver who was successful in touring car races as well as in Formula 2 .
Life
Hubert Hahne had six siblings, the brothers Wilhelm Hahne , Bernd Hahne , Norbert Hahne and Armin Hahne as well as the sisters Christel and Gerda (the mother of Jörg van Ommen ). After finishing school, Hubert Hahne completed a commercial apprenticeship, passed the sales assistant examination and worked in his father's tobacco wholesaler, who also ran a trotter breed . Hahne loved horses from a young age, but wanted to become a technician. Therefore, at the age of 23, in addition to commercial training, he began an apprenticeship as a vehicle mechanic . He later went into business for himself as a BMW dealer. There was also a BMW tuning company and the sole importation of Lamborghini models in Germany. He also tested Honda motorcycles for “power-slide” magazine.
In addition to sporting ambitions such as flying, swimming or cycling, Hubert Hahne also collected pictures and icons. In 1970 he married the actress Diana Körner , from whom he divorced after a few years. After that he lived in Italy for a long time.
Hubert Hahne died on April 24, 2019 at the age of 84 in a nursing home in Düsseldorf.
Motorsport career

Hahne began his career at the age of 25 in 1960 when he and a friend took part in the 6-hour race at the Nürburgring. After a promising start, the team was disqualified because of an illegal driver change.
In 1963 he achieved his first major success when he won the European Cup for touring cars on a BMW 700 . In 1964 Hahne dominated the German Circuit Championship with a BMW 1800 TI , he won 14 times in 16 races and won the overall standings. In 1966 he became European champion. In addition, in a frame race for the German Grand Prix on August 6, 1966, he was the first to lap the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a touring car in a BMW 2000 TI in less than 10 or in 9: 58.5 (or 9: 58.9) Minutes. He also won the 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps together with Jacky Ickx .
In 1966, Hahne switched to Formula 2. One day after his lap record with the touring car, he started with a Matra MS6 - BRM from the Tyrrell Racing Organization at the German Grand Prix and came second in the Formula 2 class behind Jean-Pierre Beltoise . From 1967 he drove for BMW (initially with a Lola chassis), but retired from the German Grand Prix with suspension damage. In 1969 he finished second in the Formula 2 European Championship . In 1970 Hahne ended his racing career.
For 1970, Hahne was planning a commitment with his own car in Formula 1. For 160,000 DM, he bought a March 701 , which was to be used for the first time at the German Grand Prix on August 2 in the Hockenheim Motodrom. However, the car turned out to be non-competitive and could not start. Hahne accused March of fraud. March director Max Mosley denied the accusation. By late payment of a partial amount, Hahne delayed delivery of the car up to a week before the intended start, so that there was no time for testing and tuning. Complaints arose from both sides, but these were withdrawn when the car had become suitable for racing. However, Hahne did not drive it himself, but rented it to Jean-Pierre Jarier in 1971 , who took part in the race at Oulton Park and the Italian Grand Prix in Monza without success .
