1000 km race on the Nürburgring 1962
The eighth 1000 km race on the Nürburgring , also VIII. Int. ADAC 1000 km Nürburgring , took place on May 27, 1962 and was the seventh round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
After the success in the first 1000 km race at the Nürburgring in 1953 ( Alberto Ascari and Giuseppe Farina won in a Ferrari 375MM Vignale ), Scuderia Ferrari was unable to achieve overall victory in the following six races. The Italian racing team wanted to counteract this fact with a large number of vehicles in 1962. The Scuderia brought four racing cars to the Eifel, three Dino-Ferraris and a 330LM . Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien drove a Dino 256SP with 2.4-liter engine, the Mexican Rodríguez brothers Pedro and Ricardo a Dino 268SP with 2.6-liter eight-cylinder engine. The third Dino was a 196SP driven by Lorenzo Bandini and Giancarlo Baghetti . The 330TRI is driven by Willy Mairesse and Mike Parkes .
Porsche was represented with two cars, both Type 718 , each with 2-liter 8-cylinder engines. However, a sensation in the race was a small British vehicle. Jim Clark in the new Lotus 23 amazed the almost 160,000 spectators at the start of the race. In heavy rain, Clark took the lead right from the start and finished the first lap with a 27-second lead over Dan Gurney's Porsche . Only when the track began to dry out after a few laps was he slowly caught. On the twelfth lap, Clark lost control of the vehicle in the Hocheichen curve at the exit of Hatzenbach and went off the track. Fumes from a damaged exhaust made him sick and unable to control the car. A second Lotus 23 with Peter Ashdown and Bruce Johnstone at the wheel finished the race four laps behind in eighth place overall.
After Clark retired, the Mairesse / Parkes-Ferrari was in the lead. The wetness of the road caused a lot of spinning and accidents. Pedro Rodríguez was eliminated by accident on the fifth lap. In the seventh lap, Carlo-Maria Abate collided in the Ferrari 250TRI of the Scuderia Serenissima with the Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ of Marcello de Luca di Lizzano. All drivers were uninjured.
In the last third of the race, Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien took the lead and never gave it up until the finish. It became exciting in the duel for second place. Joakim Bonnier in the Porsche 718 GTR had shortened the gap to the Mairesse / Parkes-Ferrari to 16 seconds, but was canceled one lap before the end due to a gearbox failure. Nevertheless, the third overall place went to Porsche through Graham Hill and Hans Herrmann in the 718 WRS. The winning time was 7: 33: 27.700 hours for 1003.640 km, which corresponded to an average of 132.797 km / h.
