Mário Veloso de Araújo Cabral (born January 15, 1934 in Cedofeita ; † August 17, 2020 ) was a Portuguese racing driver .

Career

Mário "Nicha" de Cabral was the outstanding racing driver in Portugal in the 1950s and 1960s. Cabral, who never aspired to a professional racing career, drove his first Grand Prix in the 1959 Formula 1 season . At the Portuguese Grand Prix he drove a Cooper T51 from Scuderia Centro Sud to tenth place.

The racing career was repeatedly interrupted by military missions (Cabral was a paratrooper in the Portuguese army). So he only came to racing occasionally. He competed twice more for the Scuderia Centro Sud in Formula 1, in the 1964 Italian Grand Prix he contested the race with the defeated Derrington-Francis ATS100 . He did not score points for the World Cup.

In 1965, Cabral was so badly injured in a Formula 2 race in Rouen that his career seemed over. In 1968, however, he returned and drove sports car races until the mid-1970s. Among others, he drove the Porsche 917 by David Piper . He also competed regularly in races in Africa, including some runs in the Angolan Sports Car Series .
