The seventh Sebring 12-Hour Race, also known as the 12-Hour Florida International Grand Prix of Endurance for the Amoco Trophy, Sebring, Florida , took place on March 22, 1958 at the Sebring International Raceway and was the second round of the World Sports Car Championship of this Year.

The race

The Sebring 12-hour race was the second race of the season in the World Sports Car Championship in 1958 . The first race, the 1000 km race in Buenos Aires , ended with a victory for Ferrari factory drivers Peter Collins and Phil Hill, as did the last race of the 1957 season , the 1000 km race in Caracas .

After Maserati had withdrawn from the factory in both monoposto and sports car racing , Scuderia Ferrari faced new competition with Aston Martin and Jaguar . The Aston Martin team, led by John Wyer , brought three works cars to Sebring; two DBR1 and one DB2 . The cars were driven by Stirling Moss , Tony Brooks , Carroll Shelby , Roy Salvadori , George Constantine and John Dalton . Ferrari reported three Testa Rossa , while the Jaguars were reported by private teams.

There were ratings in ten racing classes; starting with sports cars with 3 liter displacement up to touring cars up to 0.75 liters. The smallest class was won by a Fiat-Abarth 750 , which was owned by the Swiss Toulo de Graffenried . The race for the two Lister- Jaguars was over after just six laps . Archie Scott-Brown collided with Olivier Gendebien's and Ed Crawford's Ferrari on lap three , had a crack in the engine block a little later and also had to retire.

Stirling Moss and Tony Brooks' Aston Martin led the race for 70 laps. The two British had lapped the entire field except for five vehicles. After 90 laps they had to give up after breaking the wheel axle.

In the end, Peter Collins and Phil Hill won a race in the World Sports Car Championship for the third time in a row.
