Jan de Vroom

Jan de Vroom (* in Dutch East Indies ) was a Dutch racing car driver and co-founder of the North American Racing Team .

Career

Little is known about Jan de Vroom. His birth in the Dutch East Indies , today's Indonesia, is just as weakly verified by sources as his alleged murder in New York .

There is evidence of his financial participation in the founding of the North American Racing Team in 1957. He and George Arents were silent partners in Luigi Chinetti's racing team for many years .

De Vroom was also active as a racing driver. There is a record of eleven race starts between 1956 and 1958. All contested with Ferrari racing cars . He had his first use at the Governor's Trophy in 1956 at Windsor Airfield in Nassau . The race was won by Carroll Shelby in a Ferrari 410 Sport Scaglietti Spyder . De Vroom landed on his Ferrari 250 GT Boano in 22nd place. He had his best placement two days later on December 9, 1956, when he finished second in a race at the International Bahamas Speed ​​Week .

He contested the Sebring 12-hour race twice and the Le Mans 24-hour race once . In Le Mans 1957 he drove a Ferrari 290MM-C of his own team together with partner Arents . The performance ended prematurely after a brake defect. In Sebring he was fourth overall in the same year . The following year it was canceled after engine failure on the Ferrari 500TRC .
