Kristianstad 1000 km race in 1957
The 1957 1000 km Kristianstad race , also known as the Sveriges GP, 6 Hours, Rabelöf, Kristianstad , took place on August 11th on the Råbelövsbanan circuit and was the sixth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
Ferrari types
Due to a coincidence of the reports, almost all Ferrari racing sports car models from the second half of the 1950s competed in this endurance race. The works team drove the 335 Sport . Private racing teams from Italy, France, Belgium, Sweden and Finland the following types: 750 Monza , 500TRC , 500TR , 290MM , 500 Mondial and 250TR .
The race
Before the race, Ferrari was leading the world championship with 27 points ahead of Maserati with 19 points. After the cancellation of the RAC Tourist Trophy in Dundrod , Maserati had to win in Sweden and no Ferrari could be placed better than fifth in order for the world title to be still possible. What nobody knew at the time of the race was the fact that the FIA officials gave the Caracas 1000 km race in November a world championship status at the end of August, so that the championship in Kristianstad was not decided in any way.
Maserati reported two 450S , where the power was throttled to increase the durability. Mike Hawthorn reported after the race that he found it easy to follow Stirling Moss ; however, it overwhelmed the brakes of the 335 Sport which led to a few slips in the surrounding wheat fields. Even Phil Hill and Peter Collins struggled with declining braking force around the course, but occupied behind Moss and Jean Behra in 450S second place. At Ferrari, they thought they were the new world champion for three weeks before the bizarre FIA decision lifted everything.
