Joseph Eduard Robert Christian "José" Behra (born September 11, 1924 in Nice , † November 16, 1997 in Mougins ) was a French motorcycle and car racer .

Career

José Behra was born three years after his brother Jean Behra and like him made a career in motorsport. The Frenchman was the owner of a Ford dealership in Puteaux .

After a few years as a motorcycle racer, Behra began car racing in the late 1950s. He celebrated his first international success in 1955 at the 1000 km race of Monza , a race organized by the Italian state lottery company. While his brother Jean, the race together with Luigi Musso on a plant - Maserati 300S won, José Behra also finished the race in a Maserati (in this case a A6GCS ) in twelfth.

In 1956 , as a partner of his brother, he finished fifth in the Tour de France for automobiles and made his debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans a year later . At the 24-hour race in western France, he drove a Maserati 200SI together with Frenchman Lèon Coulibeuf . For the duo, after a leak in the fuel tank after driving 137 laps, the premature came out. In 1958 he drove a Ferrari 500TR registered by the North American Racing Team at Le Mans ; this time the Mexican Pedro Rodríguez was his teammate. After an engine failure, he did not finish again.

His biggest success in motor sports in 1963, he celebrated the victory at the Tour de France for automobiles in the plant - 250 GTO Ferrari with Jean Guichet . After the 1970 tour (with Jean-Claude Andruet in the Ligier JS1 ), which he could not finish, he retired from racing and dedicated himself to selling vehicles until his death.
