Career
Jean-Claude Andruet competed regularly in rallies and sports car races in the 1960s and 1970s. The Frenchman also took part in the Le Mans 24-hour race for years, where he was a works driver for Renault Alpine and Lancia . But he achieved his greatest successes as a rally driver. In 1973 he won the Monte Carlo Rally on an Alpine A110 with co-driver “Biche” (the pseudonym of the French Michèle Espinosi-Petit) . A year later, the duo won on a Lancia Stratos , the Corsica rally . He secured his third World Rally Championship victory in 1977 at the San Remo Rally . In 1970 Andruet was the overall winner of the European Rally Championship.
Andruet also won the Tour de France overall classification for automobiles three times - in 1972 , 1981 and 1982 .
His son was the chess player Gilles Andruet , who died in 1995 under unexplained circumstances.
