Per Paolo Barilla (born April 21, 1961 in Milan ) is an Italian manager and former racing car driver . He acts as Vice Chairman of the Italian pasta manufacturer and world market leader Barilla .
Athletic career
Barilla entered international motorsport in 1983 with a Group C Lancia LC2 that he used privately . After some good results (the best was sixth place with Giorgio Francia in the 1000 km race at Spa-Francorchamps as part of the World Sports Car Championship ), Lancia gave him a works contract for the 1984 season .
In the very first race - the 1000 km race in Monza - Barilla reached third place with Mauro Baldi as a teammate. This was followed by fourth place in the 1000 km race at Silverstone with Baldi, third place in the 1000 km race at the Nürburgring with Alessandro Nannini and, at the end of the season, second place in the 1000 km race in Kyalami with Bob Wollek .
In 1985 Barilla moved to the Joest Racing team . With this team and the Porsche 956 he celebrated the greatest success of his career: he won the Le Mans 24-hour race together with Klaus Ludwig and Louis Krages .
In 1987 Barilla switched to monoposto racing and drove for two years in the International Formula 3000 Championship for various teams without achieving any major successes. Due to his friendship with Giancarlo Minardi , the founder and owner of the Minardi team at the time, as well as the financial support from his industrial family, Barilla rose to the Formula 1 World Championship in the 1989 season . He made his debut at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka and took part in eight other Grands Prix the following season . In six events he could not qualify for the race, a total of Barilla only reached the goal four times. He couldn't get any points. His best placement was eleventh at the San Marino Grand Prix , and his best starting position was 14th at the US Grand Prix . Due to lack of success, he was replaced by Gianni Morbidelli before the end of the season . Barilla then ended his motorsport career and moved to the family business.
Entrepreneur
After the end of his sporting career, Barilla decided to join the family business, which is run by his brother Guido Barilla . In the meantime, Paolo Barilla, together with his other siblings Luca and Emanuela, has advanced to the rank of Deputy Chairman.
