Barilla is an Italian food company based in Parma , the world market leader in the pasta segment. The Barilla Group owns numerous food brands that are almost exclusively in the field of grain products (pasta, bread, biscuits, snacks).

With Birkel and the pasta division of Buitoni (both brands of the Italian Newlat Group ), Barilla is one of the "three big B" s that control around 25% of the pasta market in Germany.

history

The group was founded in 1877 by Pietro Barilla Senior (1845–1912) in Parma. From 1971 to 1979 the company was owned by the US company WR Grace and was then bought back by the Barilla family.

In 1999 the Swedish bakery manufacturer Wasa was bought.

In 2002 Barilla acquired the German bakery chain Kamps for 1.8 billion euros . In August 2010, however, the three bakeries and 900 branches of Kamps (2009 sales: 300 million euros) were sold to the financial investor ECM Equity Capital. The remaining part (the brands Lieken Urkorn and Golden Toast ) stayed with Barilla for the time being. This part was sold to the Czech Agrofert Group as Lieken AG in 2013 .

Barilla has 49 production sites, including numerous flour mills for its own production supply. These are mainly located in Italy (15 locations), but there are also production locations in Germany , Greece , Norway , Sweden , Turkey and the USA, not least due to company acquisitions .

80 percent of the company is owned by Guido Barilla (chairman) and his siblings Luca, Paolo and Emanuela (management). The remaining 20 percent of the shares belong to the heirs of the Swiss Hortense Anda-Bührle .

Controversy

At the end of September 2013 there were calls for a boycott against Barilla because its boss Guido Barilla said in a radio interview with the Italian broadcaster Radio24: “We will not advertise with homosexuals because we support the traditional family. If homosexuals don't like that, they can eat pasta from another manufacturer. ”He emphasized that his company only supports the“ holy family ”.

In October 2013, Barilla apologized after meeting several times with gay organizations and activists. The company spokesman Luca Virginio announced more open and holistic advertising campaigns. In addition, an advisory board has been set up to ensure “diversity” and “equality” in corporate culture with regard to sexual orientation, gender and multiculturalism.
