history

Birkel noodles

In 1874 Balthasar Stephan Birkel founded a mill and product trade in Schorndorf . The foundation stone for the first pasta factory was laid there in 1896. The first noodles were launched in 1902 under the brand name Victoria . From 1906 the company traded under the name Schwaben-Nudel-Werke B. Birkel Sons. After the purchase of the Remsmühle in Endersbach in 1909, production was relocated there. In 1950, production was switched to full automation. From 1977 Birkel expanded its range to include breadcrumbs, sauces and ready meals. In 1980 Birkel took over TAG Nahrungsmittel GmbH in Mannheim.

Among other things, the liquid egg scandal in the mid-1980s led to a crisis among German pasta manufacturers. The public was informed about the alleged use of incubated , fertilized and microbially contaminated egg products ( liquid egg ) in noodles by the Stuttgart regional council under regional councilor Manfred Bulling . This was not the case with Birkel - at least that was the opinion of the time. Klaus Birkel († May 14, 2018), the last member of the founding family in the company's management, reached an agreement with the state government in 1991 and received millions in damages. However, the drop in sales was immense, and the Danone Group took over Birkel.

According to later press reports, there should actually have been microbial contamination, which was concealed by the cooperation of companies, a participating expert and the state government. Documents that were available to the star indicated that Birkel products could actually have fertilized and incubated eggs as well as dirty eggs and also slaughterhouse waste.

Today's company became independent again in 1999 through a management buy-out (MBO). Three employees acquired the company and the Birkel brand with financial support from a holding company of German banks.

In 2000, Birkel merged with the Weinheim company 3 Glocken . In 2001 the East German Möwe Teigwarenwerk GmbH was taken over. In 2007 the Spanish group Ebro Foods ( Puleva ) bought Birkel for 30 million euros. Production in Waren on the Müritz was supposed to be closed in 2011, but this was prevented by an MBO takeover from July 1, 2011. In 2012 the headquarters of the Birkel company were relocated to Hamburg.

The Newlat Group, an Italian manufacturer of pasta, baked goods and dairy products, acquired the German noodle brands Birkel and 3 Glocken from Ebro Foods on January 1, 2014. In the course of the takeover, the company was renamed Newlat GmbH and the company headquarters moved to Mannheim.
