history

Fritz Lieken baking bread

The Lieken Simonsbrot company was founded in 1922 by the master baker Fritz Lieken , who took over the closed Simonsbrot bakery in Achim near Bremen in 1922 and expanded it into a wholemeal bakery.

In 1926, Lieken developed a technique with which bread can be preserved by wrapping it in tinfoil and then heating it to around 70 degrees Celsius. The oven-freshly packaged sliced bread could be kept for several days for the first time through this type of pasteurization. From then on, this made it possible to transport the bread and baked goods over longer distances. Fritz Lieken brought the idea of the continuous furnace to Germany from a trip to America in 1950 . He was the first German baker to put a modern wholemeal bread baking line into operation.

In 1975 the Achimer Simonsbrotfabrik, to which the Lieken Urkorn brand also belonged, the Mitteldeutsche Simonsbrotfabrik in Eschwege and the Batscheider crisp bread factory merged. In the same year Lieken Urkorn was entered in the trademark register and at that time was the only bread brand in western Germany today.

Since 1998 there have been numerous changes of ownership, from 1998 the brand belonged to Wendeln , from 2000 to Kamps and from 2002 to Barilla . The original plant in Achim was closed in 2011 due to a lack of capacity. The Lieken AG was founded in 2008 by renaming and belongs since 2013 to the Czech Agrofert -Holding.
