Kyalami 1000km race in 1984

The Kyalami 1000 km race in 1984 , also called Kyalami 1000 Kilometers , took place on November 3rd at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit and was the tenth round of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

Only three international teams made the journey to the endurance race in South Africa . After the 1000 km race in Fuji and before the end of the season in Sandown Park, Australia, many teams avoided another arduous journey. Only three vehicles of group C1 were registered, two works - Lancia LC2 and the Porsche 956 of the German Dieter Schornstein , who shared the cockpit with his compatriot Louis Krages and the French Henri Pescarolo . The Lancia LC2 were driven by Riccardo Patrese , Alessandro Nannini , Paolo Barilla and Bob Wollek . Autodelta reported three Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV6s , but the vehicles were built in South Africa and almost exclusively driven by local drivers.

In order to be able to offer the spectators a full starting field, this was filled with South African touring car teams. The difference in performance with the Lancia's was enormous. The third-placed Nissan Skyline team finished 42 laps behind the victorious factory Lancia.
