Henri Jacques William Pescarolo (born September 25, 1942 in Paris ) is a former French racing driver . He became famous for his involvement in Formula 1 (1968 to 1976) and at the Le Mans 24-hour race , which he won four times between 1972 and 1984. He also took part in the Paris-Dakar desert rally several times . In 2000 Pescarolo founded his own motorsport team, Pescarolo Sport .
Pescarolo is the record holder with 33 participations in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He broke another record in June 1987: Together with Patrick Fourticq and Hubert Auriol , he circumnavigated the earth in a Lockheed airplane in 88 hours and 49 minutes, beating the record set by Howard Hughes in 1938 for the fastest circumnavigation of the world.
Career
Henri Pescarolo, son of a well-known French surgeon, was initially to take this career path. However, “Pesca” fell under the spell of motorsport, began racing in 1964, soon got into French Formula 3 and finally won the title in 1967. He made his Formula 1 debut a year later at the Canadian Grand Prix in St. Jovite on a Matra . However, his career suffered a major setback when he sustained severe burns to his face in an accident in the spring of 1969 while testing for the Le Mans 24 Hours . Since then he has grown a beard to hide these traces.
After his recovery, he first drove in Formula 2 before he was appointed to the Matra Formula 1 team alongside Jean-Pierre Beltoise in 1970 . In addition to a third place at the Monaco Grand Prix, he achieved several top ten placements in training and a total of eight World Championship points. In 1971 he drove a March 711 used by Frank Williams , with which he was able to achieve fourth place at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone and once turned the fastest lap. However, this should already have passed the zenith of his Formula 1 career. 1972 turned out to be a disappointing year. In 1973 he was only seen at a few grands prix for the March factory team and for Frank Williams, whose cars were called Iso-Marlboro that year . In 1974 he started for Motul- BRM , but the BRM team had long since passed their best days. The cars weren't competitive and although his team-mate Jean-Pierre Beltoise scored a few times, Pescarolo was denied points. After a year break, he returned to Formula 1 for the private team BS Fabrications in 1976 . Pescarolo's sponsor Norev had purchased a Surtees TS 19 and had the car used in several races by BS Fabrications. The best result was a ninth place at the Austrian Grand Prix . After the Grand Prix in Watkins Glen , Pescarolo said goodbye to Formula 1.
While the mostly a little distant, bearded Frenchman hardly ever got beyond being an extra in Formula 1, it is his successes in sports car races that are the milestones of his career. It was only in the sports car that he was able to really show off his talent. For years he was a main character in the French Matra team and in the sports car world championship, where he competed for Matra, Alfa Romeo , Ferrari , Porsche , Lancia , Jaguar and Mercedes , celebrated four victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the years 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1984 and 22 victories in individual races. His 33 participations in Le Mans are unsurpassed to this day and his green helmet was almost as part of the inventory at this race as the famous watch. Since 1980 he has also participated in numerous editions of the Paris-Dakar rally.
In 2000, Henri Pescarolo founded his own sports car team with Pescarolo Sport , with which he fought for victory with the previously superior Audi in 2005 at Le Mans , before the Pescarolo- Judd finally took second place. The racing team was insolvent in the summer of 2012 and was liquidated in the course of 2013.

1 In 1982 Pescarolo changed to the Rondeau of Ragnotti / Rondeau after the retirement and formed a team of three with the two drivers. This prototype failed after 144 laps with engine failure. Pescarolo is therefore twice on the list of results for this year's 24-hour race.
