The 1968 Italian Grand Prix took place in Monza on September 8th and was the ninth race of the 1968 World Automobile Championship .
Reports
background
During the five-week summer break between the German Grand Prix and the next World Championship round in Italy, Jackie Stewart had won a Formula 1 race in Oulton Park that was not part of the World Championship .
The entry list for the race in Monza exceeded those of all previous World Championship races of the season. Ferrari reported a third works car, manned it with Derek Bell and thus enabled him to make his Grand Prix debut. Similar plans were also made for Team Lotus , where Mario Andretti wanted to compete for the first time. He also took part in training, but then decided not to start the race in favor of a race in his home country, as did Bobby Unser , who postponed the chance given by the BRM factory team to make his Formula 1 debut at the US Grand Prix .
Even Ken Tyrrell expanded its Matra -Kundenteam by another vehicle and committed Johnny Servoz-Gavin as a driver. A second Honda factory car was driven by David Hobbs .
Cooper also planned to start a three-car team. Since neither Lucien Bianchi nor Robin Widdows were available, only Vic Elford was finally reported.
training
John Surtees secured the first and only pole position for the Honda factory team with his best time in practice. Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon qualified alongside him for the front row. They were followed by Jacky Ickx and Graham Hill, who is still the leader in the world championship .
The two Americans Mario Andretti and Bobby Unser had originally planned to take part in two races during the weekend and to commute between Italy and the USA several times. They qualified for starting positions 10 and 21 of the Italian GP. Due to a clause in the regulations that prohibits participation in two racing events within 24 hours, however, the two had to choose one of the races. In the end, they did without the Grand Prix and took part exclusively in the USAC race in Indianapolis , which was held in parallel .
run
For the first time in several months, a Grand Prix took place entirely under dry conditions. It was very hot.
Surtees initially converted his pole position into a lead, which he had to give up to McLaren during the first lap. On the seventh lap, Surtees got back to the top position through a clever maneuver out of slipstream, but was only able to defend it against McLaren for a few kilometers. Meanwhile Amon crashed into the lane and while trying to avoid the crashed Ferrari, Surtees hit the wall and had to give up. This put Jo Siffert in pursuit behind Bruce McLaren.
In the following laps, exciting slipstream duels developed for the lead between McLaren, Siffert, Stewart and Hulme . Meanwhile, world championship leader Graham Hill had to retire when one of the wheels on his Lotus 49 came loose.
The duel for the places behind the top group remained exciting for a long time between Servoz-Gavin, Ickx and Rindt . However, the Austrian retired on the 32nd lap due to an engine failure.
McLaren dropped out of the leading group when he pitted on lap 35 due to a lack of oil and was eliminated. Stewart and Siffert both had to give up in the following laps due to technical problems, so that Hulme remained alone at the top and was able to secure his first win of the season without risk.
Shortly before the end of the race, Ickx had to go to the pits to refuel and thereby lost second place to Servoz-Gavin, who was on the podium at a Grand Prix for the first and only time. Jackie Oliver secured the fastest race lap for the first time.
