At the Italian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with medium (white) and soft (yellow) tire compounds , as well as intermediates (light blue) and full wets (orange) for wet conditions .

With Michael Schumacher (five times), Rubens Barrichello , Alonso (twice each) and Vettel (once), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

At the start of the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso, who started from fourth place, took the lead ahead of Vettel and Hamilton. Schumacher also got off to a good start, starting from eighth position and taking over fourth position. There was a starting collision in midfield. Vitantonio Liuzzi , who started from last place, lost control of his car and turned into the field. It collided with Vitaly Petrow and Nico Rosberg . The race ended immediately for the three drivers. Liuzzi was blamed for the accident by the race stewards and received a starting place penalty of five positions for the next race.

In the subsequent safety car phase, Kamui Kobayashi , Barrichello, Daniel Ricciardo and Bruno Senna came to the pits to make repairs. Ricciardo, who already had technical problems at the start, stayed in the pits for over 16 minutes and then resumed the race. He crossed the finish line 14 laps behind and was not classified. Jérôme D'Ambrosio gave up after the first lap because he had a transmission problem.

At the restart the first two positions remained unchanged. However, Schumacher managed to overtake Hamilton on the start-finish straight and take third place. Shortly thereafter there was a collision between Webber and Massa, in which Webber damaged the front wing. He drove on, but in the Parabolica he lost control of his vehicle and drove into the tire wall. It was the first and only retirement of a Red Bull driver of the season. In the meantime, Vettel had taken over the leadership of Alonso. He passed his opponent in the variant della Roggia .

Button, Hamilton and Schumacher (from left) exit the Parabolica, shortly before Button overtook both opponents

While Vettel and Alonso break away at the top, Schumacher and Hamilton dueled behind the two. Hamilton tried several times to get past his opponent, but was initially unsuccessful. After Adrian Sutil retired with hydraulic problems, Hamilton managed to overtake Schumacher on the start-finish straight. However, Schumacher did not give up and immediately overtook Hamilton by overtaking him on the outside of the Curva Grande . As a result of the duel between the two racing drivers, Hamilton's team-mate Button managed to catch up with the two. After Hamilton did not get past Schumacher again, Button overtook him in the Curva Grande . On the same lap, Button managed to overtake Schumacher as well. In the next few laps, the three drivers went to the pits in the order Schumacher, Hamilton and Button to change tires. However, there were no changes in position within this trio. Even when Vettel and Alonso pitted, the positions remained unchanged.

Another exciting duel for fourth position developed between Schumacher and Hamilton. After Schumacher was informed by his team that he was not allowed to change lanes several times during the duel, Hamilton finally managed to drive past Schumacher on the 27th lap. Hamilton had no chance against Schumacher for long stretches because the car was too slow with its set-up on the straight and it was not faster even with the help of the DRS . At this stage of the race, both Sauber drivers retired due to gearbox damage. Sergio Pérez was in seventh place before his retirement and had not yet completed his only planned pit stop.

After the second pit stop, Button, who had already approached Alonso before the pit stop, managed to overtake his opponent and take second position. Hamilton also managed to get close to Alonso, but there was not enough time for an overtaking maneuver.

Vettel finally won his eighth race of the season ahead of Button and Alonso. Hamilton was fourth ahead of Schumacher and Massa. Alguersuari, who started the race from 18th place, achieved his best result in Formula 1 in seventh place. The other points went to Paul di Resta , Senna and Buemi. Bruno Senna scored Formula 1 points for the first time. Pastor Maldonado , who was sixth in the initial phase, remained in eleventh without points.

In the drivers' world championship, Vettel extended his lead again. Webber dropped to fourth place behind Alonso and Button. In the constructors' world championship the first positions remained unchanged.
