Reports
background
After the Italian Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 112 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and with 117 points ahead of Jenson Button . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 126 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 197 points ahead of Ferrari . At this Grand Prix, Vettel had the chance to win the drivers' world championship early.
This was the last time Sam Michael was technical director for Williams . Michael left the racing team after eleven years. In 2012 he will work for McLaren.
At the Singapore Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with soft (yellow) and supersoft (red) tire compounds , as well as intermediates (light blue) and full wets (orange) for wet conditions .
With Alonso (twice) and Lewis Hamilton (once) two former winners competed at this Grand Prix.
training
The first free practice started half an hour late as some curbs had been damaged by a series of frames and was shortened to an hour. The training was interrupted twice. The first time, Heikki Kovalainen's car had to be salvaged, the second time, repairs had to be carried out on the track because a notch was loose and a nail came out. Hamilton posted the fastest lap ahead of Vettel and Mark Webber . In this training, Narain Karthikeyan took over the HRT from Vitantonio Liuzzi . In the second free practice session, Vettel took the lead. Alonso and Hamilton followed in second and third place. In the third free practice session, Webber set the fastest lap ahead of Button and Vettel. HRT pilots Daniel Ricciardo and Liuzzi never managed a time within the 107 percent rule in any training session .
Qualifying
In the first section of qualifying, Vettel achieved the fastest lap. The HRT, Virgin and Lotus pilots as well as Vitaly Petrow were eliminated. All pilots stayed within the 107 percent limit and qualified. The second segment was interrupted nine minutes before the end because Kamui Kobayashi hit the boundary at the exit of the Singapore Sling . Kobayashi left the car on his own and was uninjured. Vettel was again the fastest pilot. The Sauber , Toro Rosso and Williams drivers and Bruno Senna were eliminated. In the last section, Vettel again achieved the fastest lap and took pole position in front of Webber and Button.
run
Vettel won the race ahead of Button and Webber. Vettel kept the lead throughout and scored a start-to-finish victory. There were several duels in midfield, some of which ended in collisions.
Vettel and Red Bull-Renault increased their lead in the world championship. At this point, Vettel only needed one point to win the World Cup. There were only theoretical chances of a title for Button.
The finish line on the first five places corresponded to the later final placement of the drivers' world championship at the end of the season. Apart from this race in Formula 1 history, this was only the case at the 2015 Japanese Grand Prix .
