Reports

background

After the Turkish Grand Prix , Sebastian Vettel led the drivers' standings with 34 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 38 points ahead of Mark Webber . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 43 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 83 points ahead of Ferrari .

At the Spanish Grand Prix, Pirelli competed for the first time of the season with modified tire compounds. The previous hard tire compound has been replaced by a new, hard variant. The name and marking (silver) of the tire remained the same. Pirelli also provided the drivers with soft (yellow) tire compounds , as well as intermediates (light blue) and full wets (orange) for wet conditions .

With Michael Schumacher (six times), Fernando Alonso , Felipe Massa , Jenson Button and Webber (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

training

The rear wing of the Ferrari that was classified as non-compliant in Friday practice

In the first free practice session, last year's winner Webber set the fastest lap ahead of his teammates Vettel and Nico Rosberg . In this training Nico Hülkenberg took over the Force India from Paul di Resta and Daniel Ricciardo took over the Toro Rosso from Sébastien Buemi . In the second free practice, Webber kept the top position. Hamilton and Vettel followed in second and third place. In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest lap ahead of Webber and Schumacher.

Before the last training session in Barcelona, Ferrari had to retrofit its new rear wing with Gurney Flaps because they did not comply with the rules.

Qualifying

In the first segment of qualifying Schumacher achieved the fastest lap. The HRT and Virgin pilots as well as Nick Heidfeld , Rubens Barrichello and Jarno Trulli were eliminated. Heidfeld did not score any time and therefore did not manage to qualify within the 107 percent rule . He was subsequently given permission to start the race. In the second section, Vettel drove back to the front of the field. The Force India, Sauber and Toro Rosso pilots and Heikki Kovalainen were eliminated. In the third section, Webber set the fastest time and achieved his first pole position of the season. Vettel, who started the race from pole position in the first four races, finished in second place ahead of Hamilton, who was third.

run

Alonso, who started the race from fourth on the grid, had the best start of the front drivers. He overtook the Vettel starting in front of him on the inside lane and took the lead. Webber, who started from pole position, fell back to third place. Schumacher, who moved up from tenth to sixth, and Heidfeld, who started from last place, improved to 19th position, also started well. In the following laps, the positions at the top remained unchanged, the leading four drivers, Alonso, Vettel, Webber and Hamilton, however, separated from fifth-placed Vitali Petrow . In the meantime, Button, who had dropped to tenth place at the start, made up a position with an overtaking maneuver against Buemi.

After a few pilots from midfield had completed their first pit stop, Vettel pitted on lap nine and stayed on soft tires. He dropped to ninth place, but improved to seventh place after his stop by overtaking Button and Massa on the first lap. One lap after Vettel, Alonso and Webber also made their first pit stops. While Hamilton took the lead, Alonso held the position in front of Vettel, who was on the track directly behind him. Webber, like Vettel before, also fell behind Button and Massa. A little later, however, both Button and Webber managed to overtake Massa.

Vettel took the lead of the race on lap 24

After Hamilton's stop on lap 11, Alonso took over the lead of the race again. Hamilton passed Webber, who had overtaken Button in the meantime, through the later pit stop and took third position. As with the first stops, it was Vettel who made his first stop on lap 18 as the first pilot in the leading group. He switched to his third soft set of tires. After Alonso and Webber pitted on the next lap, Vettel was in front of the two racing drivers. Meanwhile, Hamilton led the race until his second pit stop. On the 22nd lap, Heidfeld was the last driver to make his first pit stop. He started on hard tires and had three new sets of soft tires available for the rest of the race. After 28 laps, Vitantonio Liuzzi was the first driver to retire. The HRT pilot had to give up with transmission problems.

At the top, Vettel and Hamilton separated from Alonso and Webber in the following rounds. Once in the pits, Button finished fifth. On lap 29, Alonso and Webber again made their third pit stop at the same time. Since both pilots had used up their soft tire sets, they switched to the hard tire compound. A lap later, Button, who was on a different strategy, made his second pit stop. Webber increased the pressure on Alonso in the following laps, but it took several laps to perform an overtaking maneuver. Alonso managed to counter and overtake Webber back. A little later, both drivers were overtaken by Button.

Meanwhile, Vettel and Hamilton were in the pits for the third time. However, their positions did not change. The two racing drivers already had a bigger lead on Button, Alonso and Webber. However, Alonso and Webber did not make their fourth pit stop at the same time. Alonso made the 39th, Webber in the 47th round. With the later pit stop, Webber managed to pass Alonso. Alonso also had problems setting good lap times with the hard tires. Shortly after Webber's pit stop, Vettel, Button and Hamilton also made their final pit stops. Vettel lost the lead briefly to Hamilton, but took it back after his stop. With the change in leadership, however, Hamilton managed to drive the 10,000 lead lap of a McLaren in Formula 1.

A little later Kovalainen retired with a driving error. While the yellow flags were showing, Hamilton set the fastest lap, and Button and Webber set their personal best. After the race, investigations were carried out against the three pilots, but there were no sanctions.

Sergio Pérez scored his first points

While there were no more changes in the front positions, there were shifts in the lower points. Massa was first overtaken by Sergio Pérez and then by Heidfeld. While Heidfeld also passed Pérez, Massa had to give up the race after 58 laps with a gearbox failure.

Vettel eventually won the race ahead of Hamilton, Button and Webber. All other pilots did not finish in the lead lap. Alonso was fifth ahead of the Mercedes drivers Schumacher and Rosberg. Heidfeld finished the race in eighth place and made up 16 positions in the race. Pérez, who crossed the finish line in ninth place ahead of his teammate Kamui Kobayashi , scored his first points in Formula 1.

In the world championship, Vettel further expanded his lead. The positions in the front seats remained unchanged. In terms of the designers, Red Bull-Renault and McLaren-Mercedes continued to stand out from the other teams.

With Sebastian Vettel, another driver won for the sixth time in a row. For the first time since the Spanish Grand Prix in 2000 , the pole setter did not win.
