run

At the start, Panis and Gené, who also comes from Catalonia , stopped. Before the start lights went out, Coulthard's car rolled very little, but the early start sensors did not register an illegal early start. Häkkinen was able to maintain the lead after the race was released, followed by Coulthard, Villeneuve who overtook both Ferraris in the first corner, Michael Schumacher, Irvine and Trulli. Irvine lost two places due to a bad start. After the first lap, Häkkinen continues, the remaining five positions have not changed. Panis was able to resume the race one lap behind, but came straight onto the track in midfield. Häkkinen is now beginning to extend the lead and after five laps is already ten seconds ahead of fourth-placed Michael Schumacher, who in turn is held up by Villeneuve.

De la Rosa opened the pit stop series on lap 17, five laps later the top team Irvine pits; His official standing time was 7.8 seconds. Villeneuve is now doing everything possible to stay ahead of Michael Schumacher and regularly braked himself in corners one and five. On lap 23 the leader Häkkinen goes into the pit lane, his lead over Michael Schumacher is almost 29 seconds. After a standing time of 7.7 seconds, Häkkinen comes back on the field in second behind Coulthard. One lap later, Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher followed with their pit stops, but the Ferrari team worked faster and was able to send Michael Schumacher back onto the field before Villeneuve. Both come in sixth and eighth, Irvine was able to slip between the two and get back into the race. As the last of the top teams, Coulthard came into the pits as the leader on lap 26, but he misjudged himself when braking for the parking space and shot out by almost a meter. As a result, his stop time is around 12.8 seconds, but he comes back on the field before Michael Schumacher.

Villeneuve wanted to make his second stop on lap 40. Villeneuve wanted to have the top wing of the rear spoiler removed in order to have more top speed on the straights, but that could not be reduced. The mechanics then tore off the wing with force, and after standing for 28.7 seconds Villeneuve could have left again. However, the gearbox could not shift into gear and the Canadian finally had to give up the race.

In the last six laps Coulthard was held up for a long time by vehicles that had to be lapped, including Hill, Barrichello and Trulli, whereupon Michael Schumacher was able to rejoin and make the final exciting. In the end, Häkkinen won the Spanish Grand Prix ahead of Coulthard and Michael Schumacher. The winner's trophy for Mika Häkkinen was presented by King Juan Carlos I of Spain . The trophy for the victorious designer McLaren was presented by the President of the International Olympic Committee , Juan Antonio Samaranch , to the Technical Director of McLaren, Adrian Newey .
