run
At the start, Häkkinen was able to keep ahead of Irvine, Coulthard, Villeneuve and Salo got off to a bad start and slipped back to fifth, 13th and 20th. After the first lap, Häkkinen, who was meanwhile starting to build a lead on the Irvine behind, led ahead of Fisichella, Frentzen, Coulthard and Hill. On lap ten, Salo is still in 20th place behind de la Rosa and loses a full four seconds on the leader until he was lapped on lap 23.
The pit stop series started on lap 29, Irvine came into the pits in second place and on the following lap Frentzen, who was now third, came back on the track just behind Fisichella. The leader Häkkinen drove into the pits on lap 31, and after a standing time of 7.4 seconds he remained first. Thanks to a quick pit stop and quick laps in front of that, Coulthard was able to overtake Frentzen and Fisichella for third place. Fisichella started the second series of pit stops by the top drivers on lap 52, but a gearbox defect prevented him from continuing the race. Häkkinen made his stop on lap 55 and was able to keep the lead, followed by Irvine and Coulthard into the pit lane on lap 57. Despite the somewhat faster pit stop, Irvine was able to stay in second place until he braked on lap 67 in the seventh corner and thus enabled Coulthard to take second place. Mika Häkkinen stayed in the lead for the remaining laps and was able to win the race ahead of Coulthard and Irvine. The winner's trophy for Mika Häkkinen was presented by Tamás Deutsch , the Hungarian Minister for Youth and Sport. The trophy for the victorious designer McLaren was also presented to Ron Dennis by Tamás Deutsch .
