report

backgrounds

After the Styrian Grand Prix , Valtteri Bottas led the drivers' standings by six points over Lewis Hamilton and 17 points over Lando Norris . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led with 41 points ahead of McLaren and with 53 points ahead of Red Bull Racing .

At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Hard (white, compound C2 ), P Zero Medium (yellow, C3 ) and P Zero Soft (red, C4 ), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full for wet conditions -Wets (blue) available. For logistical reasons, all drivers received the same number of sets of tires in the respective degrees of hardness; it was not possible to place different orders. Each driver thus had eight sets of the soft , three sets of the medium and two sets of the hard mix.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the Hungarian Grand Prix took place under strict safety and hygiene rules. No spectators were allowed, and every person who was in the paddock had to be tested for the SARS-CoV-2 virus at least every five days . In the run-up to the race, two people who had not been present at the previous races tested positive for the virus and then isolated.

With Hamilton (seven times), Sebastian Vettel (twice), Kimi Räikkönen and Daniel Ricciardo (once each), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were Loïc Bacquelaine (BEL), Gerd Ennser (DEU), Lajos Herczeg (HUN) and Derek Warwick (GBR).

free training

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 16.003 minutes, ahead of Bottas and Sergio Pérez .

In the second free practice session, which was held on a wet track, Vettel was fastest in 1: 40.464 minutes ahead of Bottas and Carlos Sainz Jr. Only 13 of the 20 drivers drove a timed lap.

In the third free practice session, Bottas was fastest in 1: 15.437 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Pérez.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Pérez was fastest. The Alfa Romeo and Haas drivers and Daniil Kwjat were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest drivers qualified for the third part of the qualifying and had to start the race with the tires used here, everyone else had a free choice of tires for the start of the race. The Mercedes and Racing Point pilots set their fastest lap times on the medium tire compound, everyone else on soft . Hamilton was fastest. The Williams and Renault drivers and Alexander Albon were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Pierre Gasly was unable to participate in this segment due to a technical defect. Hamilton set the fastest time with a lap time of 1: 13.447 minutes ahead of Bottas and Lance Stroll . It was the 90th pole position for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship, including the seventh at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

run

It was raining before the race, so the track was wet. On the way to the starting grid, Verstappen slipped into the track barrier, damaging the front wing and wheel suspension of his vehicle. Nevertheless, he drove to his starting point, where the mechanics repaired the damage until the start of the race.

Since the track was still wet at the start, the race management gave the drivers a free choice of tires. Kevin Magnussen initially used full wets , all other pilots used intermediates . At the end of the warm-up lap, the two Haas drivers Grosjean and Magnussen drove into the pit lane and switched to dry tires. Hamilton stayed in the lead at the start. The drivers in the straight starting positions started worse because the track was much wetter there. Behind Hamilton were Stroll, Verstappen, Vettel and Leclerc.

After the first lap, more drivers pitted to switch to dry tires. After the tire changes, Hamilton led ahead of Verstappen, Magnussen, Romain Grosjean , Stroll, Charles Leclerc , Bottas, Vettel and Albon. Nicholas Latifi collided with Sainz in the pit lane, where he suffered a puncture. He spun in the first corner and had to slow down to the pits. The race management gave Latifi a five-second time penalty due to an unsafe clearance.

Grosjean couldn't keep up with the pace at the front and had to let Stroll pass, who a few laps later also overtook Magnussen. Bottas overtook Leclerc and Grosjean and then caught up with Magnussen, whom he passed on the 17th lap. Gasly gave up the race in the pit lane due to a technical defect.

Vettel braked himself and came off the track briefly, so that he lost a position to Albon. Albon then shortened the gap to Leclerc, who was the only pilot in the top ten to switch to the soft mix at the pit stop . Albon overtook Leclerc on lap 18 and was now seventh. Leclerc also had to let Vettel pass on the following lap, then on lap 20 he switched to the hard mix.

At the top, Hamilton had meanwhile extended his lead over Verstappen to twelve seconds, Stroll was already 28 seconds behind Hamilton in third place. Albon overtook Grosjean on lap 29 and pulled away from him. Vettel drove into the pits and, like his team-mate, switched to Hard . Pérez was now behind Grosjean and passed him one lap later, and Ricciardo and Sainz did the same shortly afterwards. Bottas pitted for the second time and switched to medium again . Albon switched to Hard one lap later , at the same time the first drivers reported the onset of rain. However, this subsided shortly afterwards.

Stroll switched to the medium mixture on lap 35 and fell behind Bottas, who had set the fastest lap of the race several times in a row. Verstappen switched to Hard , one lap later Hamilton to Medium . Hamilton led ahead of Verstappen, Bottas, Stroll, Ricciardo, Sainz, Vettel, Albon, Magnussen and Pérez.

In the following laps, Bottas shortened the gap to Verstappen. Ricciardo switched to medium again and dropped back to ninth place. After Bottas couldn't get past Verstappen at first, he switched to Hard again . Since his lead over Stroll was big enough, he stayed third. He then drove the fastest lap of the race to date and caught up to two seconds per lap. Stroll also switched to Hard again , he stayed fourth and came back on the track immediately before Vettel and Albon. But then he clearly separated from both of them.

Hamilton switched to the soft mix again on lap 66 , but remained in the lead. Albon passed this after another brake from Vettel and was now fifth. Bottas caught up with Verstappen on the penultimate lap. However, he no longer came within striking distance to launch an attack. Hamilton set the fastest lap of the race on the last lap.

Hamilton won the race ahead of Verstappen and Bottas. It was the 86th victory for Hamilton in the Formula 1 World Championship, including the eighth at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The remaining points were placed by Stroll, Albon, Vettel, Pérez, Ricciardo, Magnussen and Sainz. Hamilton received one more point for setting the fastest lap and finishing in the top ten.

Grosjean and Magnussen subsequently received a time penalty of ten seconds because their race engineers had instructed them to come to the pits to change tires before the start of the race. This represented an unauthorized driving aid that was not allowed during the introductory lap. As a result, both lost one position each, so that Sainz was rated ninth, Magnussen tenth, Raikkonen as 15th and Grosjean as 16th.

In the overall standings, Hamilton took the lead from Bottas, while Verstappen was third. In the constructors' championship, Mercedes was now ahead of Red Bull and McLaren.
