Nicholas Latifi (born June 29, 1995 in Montréal , Québec ) is a Canadian racing driver of Iranian descent. He competed in the FIA Formula 2 Championship (formerly GP2 series) from 2014 to 2019 and was runner-up in his last season. In 2020 he will drive for Williams in Formula 1 .

Career

Latifi began his motorsport career in karting in 2009 , where he remained active until 2012. In the 2011/2012 season he also made his debut in formula racing and took part in two races in the Skip Barber Winter Series . He decided one thing for himself. In 2012, Latifi initially received a cockpit at BVM in the Italian Formula 3 championship . After the second event, he moved to JD Motorsport within the series . For this team he completed the rest of the season and won a race. In total, he was on the podium four times. He finished the season in seventh place in the drivers' standings while his team-mate Riccardo Agostini won the championship. In 2012 Latifi also took part in a GT race of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge in North America .

In early 2013 , Latifi competed for Giles Motorsport in the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand. He finished the season in ninth place. Then Latifi returned to Europe and received a cockpit from Carlin for the European Formula 3 championship in 2013 . He finished the season in 15th place overall. In addition, Latifi took part in the British Formula 3 Championship for Carlin in 2013 . With a third place as the best result, he finished fifth there. In 2014 , Latifi competed in the Florida Winter Series at the beginning of the year . He won four races and was the second best driver in terms of placements. Then Latifi drove for the Prema Powerteam in the European Formula 3 championship in 2014 . With a second place he was once on the podium. As the third best driver in his racing team, he was tenth overall. His teammate Esteban Ocon won the championship title. In addition, Latifi entered Formula Renault 3.5 for Tech 1 Racing in September . Because of this commitment, he decided not to take part in the last Formula 3 weekend. Latifi achieved second place in the Formula Renault 3.5 as the best result and was 20th overall at the end of the season. In November 2014 , Latifi also made his debut in the GP2 series for Hilmer Motorsport . In addition to his involvement in formula racing , Latifi took part in two races of the British Porsche Carrera Cup for Redline Racing .

In 2015 , Latifi decided to participate in Formula Renault 3.5 at Arden Motorsport . With two fourth places as the best results, he finished the season on the eleventh championship place. Internally he was defeated by Yegor Orudschew with 55 to 133 points. In addition, Latifi took part in some races of the 2015 GP2 series and the Pro Mazda Championship winter series for MP Motorsport . He also drove a few races in the British Porsche Carrera Cup.

In 2016 , Latifi switched to DAMS in the GP2 series. A second place at the season opener in Barcelona was his best result. He finished the season with 23 points in 16th place, while his teammate Alex Lynn was sixth with 124 points. In 2017 , Latifi stayed with DAMS in the racing series that had been renamed the FIA Formula 2 Championship in the winter . He won a race and finished the season with 178 in fifth place in the championship. In 2018 he again competed for DAMS in Formula 2. He won the sprint race at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and finished the season in ninth place overall. In 2019 he started again at DAMS with Sérgio Sette Câmara as a teammate, who joined the team from Carlin. Latifi was able to achieve a total of four victories, namely the main race in Bahrain, Spain and Hungary and the sprint race in Azerbaijan, and came second in the main races in Great Britain and Russia and the sprint race in Abu Dhabi. In the overall standings he was runner-up with 214 points behind Nyck de Vries , who had collected 266 points. His teammate Sérgio Sette Câmara, who finished fourth at the end of the season, collected a total of 204 points.

In 2020 he will start for Williams in Formula 1, where he was previously a test and reserve driver. There he replaces Robert Kubica and is a team-mate of George Russell . For his career in this racing series, he chose the 6 as the permanent starting number, which was last used by Nico Rosberg from 2014 to 2016 . Since numerous races of the 2020 Formula 1 World Championship were canceled or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Latifi had to wait for his debut until the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix in July. Here he reached eleventh place and barely missed a point on his debut. However, in the race, which was characterized by numerous failures, he was also the last driver to cross the finish line. He is currently in 19th place in the drivers' standings after the seventh race.
