After the run in Barcelona , Jolyon Palmer led the drivers' standings with 22 points ahead of Julian Leal and 28 points ahead of Felipe Nasr . Carlin led the team standings with seven points ahead of DAMS and 57 points ahead of the ART Grand Prix .

At the Monte Carlo race, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Super Soft (red) as well as Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Qualifying

The qualifying was divided into two sections with two groups in order to avoid obstructions on the narrow course in Monte Carlo. In the first section, group A, the drivers with an odd start number, and then Group B, the drivers with an even start number. The ratings of the two sections were not combined, instead the placements within the group decided on the starting positions. The group with the fastest driver got the odd, the other group the even starting positions.

In Group A, Palmer set the fastest lap ahead of Mitch Evans and Johnny Cecotto Jr. In Group B, Rio Haryanto set the fastest time ahead of Stéphane Richelmi and Stoffel Vandoorne . Since Palmer drove faster than Haryanto, he secured pole position.

Following qualifying, penalties were imposed on four drivers: Daniel Abt , Haryanto, Facu Regalia and Nasr had stopped competitors in qualifying and were all penalized by three positions.

Main race

After the race was stopped and several safety car phases were necessary, Palmer finally won ahead of Evans and Nasr. In addition, Palmer drove the fastest lap. The pole position for the sprint race went to Richelmi.
