Sergio Canamasas
Sergio Canamasas (born April 3, 1986 in Madrid ) is a Spanish automobile racing driver . He has competed in the FIA Formula 2 Championship (formerly GP2 series) since 2012 .
Career
Canamasas made his debut in formula racing in 2007 in the Copa de España of Spanish Formula 3 . With a podium finish, he finished eighth overall in his first season. In 2008 he entered the Spanish Formula 3 and remained without points for the entire season. In 2009 he stayed in the Spanish racing series, which had since been renamed the European F3 Open . Canamasas scored three podiums and finished sixth overall at the end of the season.
In 2010 he switched to Formula Renault 3.5 , in which he competed for the Austrian racing team FHV Interwetten.com . His teammate was his compatriot Bruno Méndez , who had won the European F3 Open a year earlier. At the end of the season Canamasas finished 25th overall without scoring any points. In 2011 Canamasas completed his second season in Formula Renault 3.5 for BVM Target , which had entered the championship this season. With a third place at the Hungaroring he achieved his first podium and his first pole position in this championship. At the end of the season he was eighth in the drivers' standings with 69 points, ahead of his team-mate Daniel Zampieri , who had 28 points.
In 2012 , Canamasas was initially not active in any racing series. In mid-July he received a cockpit at Venezuela GP Lazarus in the GP2 series and replaced Fabrizio Crestani there . According to their own statements, the racing team had tried very hard to commit after they had only scored one point. Canamasas, however, like his team-mates Giancarlo Serenelli and René Binder , remained without points and finished 27th in the drivers' championship. In 2013 Canamasas moved to Caterham within the GP2 series . Eighth place was his best result and he finished the season with three points in 25th place overall. Within the team he was clearly defeated by his teammate Alexander Rossi , who was ninth with a win and 92 points. Canamasas also worked as a development driver for the Caterham Formula 1 team . In 2014 , Canamasas entered the GP2 series for Trident Racing's second race weekend . He finished second in the sprint race in Monte Carlo . In the sprint race in Monza , Canamasas was noticed by several wild actions that led to the retirement of several drivers. The race management then took him out of the race. While his teammate Johnny Cecotto jr. Fifth with 140 points, Canamasas was 14th in the drivers' standings with 29 points.
In 2015 Canamasas initially competed for MP Motorsport in the GP2 series. In the main race in Monte Carlo he was third. Despite a report, he did not appear at the fourth event. He then left the team. After a racing weekend for Lazarus, he switched to Hilmer Motorsport . Then he returned to Lazarus. There he represented the injured Zoël Amberg . He finished the season in 15th place overall. In 2016 , Canamasas played another season in the GP2 series for Carlin . Binder took over his cockpit at one event. With a fifth place as the best result, he was 19th in the drivers' championship.
In 2017 Canamasas will enter its sixth season of the GP2 series, which is now called the FIA Formula 2 Championship. First he returned to Trident, where he drove in the 2014 season. He has been driving for Rapax since the fifth race weekend in Spielberg .
