Play action

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A play-action is a move in American football . The attacking team feigns a running game , but actually plays a pass . Play-action is one of the fake moves.

In the typical play-action sequence, the quarterback takes the ball after the snap and runs back to pretend to hand it over to the running back . When handing over, however, he pulls the ball back and hides it from the opposing defense . The running back runs forward as if he had a ball in his arms and was trying to make up yards . The wide receivers also initially work as blockers to support the fictitious run. The opposing defense now focuses on the running back.

Suddenly, however, the quarterback gives up the hiding place, the wide receivers break out of their blocks and run free to be served by the quarterback with a pass.
